Ian Gillan of Deep Purple Reveals Vision Loss, Eyes Retirement
Ian Gillan, the iconic frontman of the legendary rock band Deep Purple, has announced that he is experiencing significant vision loss and hinted that retirement may be on the horizon. In a candid interview with *Uncut*, the 80-year-old singer shared his concerns about his health and future with the band, stating, “I think if I lose my energy I’m going to stop. I don’t want to be an embarrassment to anyone. We’re not far off that.”
Gillan’s admission comes as the band prepares for several performances, including a one-off show in Tbilisi, Georgia, on November 16, followed by appearances in Dubai and Kuala Lumpur over the next week. The group has also announced plans for a European tour set for June and July 2026. Despite these upcoming events, Gillan expressed uncertainty about his ability to continue touring.
In his interview, Gillan revealed the extent of his vision impairment, noting, “I’ve only got 30 per cent vision. That won’t get better.” He explained that the condition complicates everyday tasks, such as using a laptop. “I can’t see anything on the screen unless I use my peripheral vision – I pick up a line by looking at it sideways. But you find a way. You adapt.”
Reflecting on the challenges of aging, he remarked, “It’s hilarious this growing old thing. It’s a laugh a minute. Well, sometimes yes and sometimes no.” He acknowledged the physical changes he has experienced, stating, “I walk down the road and hear something drop off – clang, there’s something else gone. Nothing’s changed really apart from I can’t pole vault any more. Other than that, things move a little more slowly. But nothing’s changed.”
Gillan’s contemplation of retirement aligns with recent news from the music industry. Just days prior, fellow rock icon David Coverdale, who temporarily replaced Gillan as Deep Purple’s lead singer from 1973 to 1976, announced his own retirement. Coverdale expressed gratitude to his fans and supporters, stating, “It really is time for me to just enjoy my retirement.”
Deep Purple, known for their influential contributions to rock music, released their 23rd studio album, titled ‘=1’, last year. The album features singles such as “Lazy Sod,” “Portable Door,” and “Pictures Of You.” As Gillan reflects on his career and the inevitable passage of time, fans and fellow musicians alike will watch closely to see how he navigates this new chapter.
