Universities and Councils Unite to Secure £1 Billion Funding
Universities and local councils in the United Kingdom have joined forces in an effort to secure nearly £1 billion in funding aimed at promoting inclusive growth. This collaborative initiative comes in response to significant financial pressures affecting both sectors, which have reported severe constraints in delivering essential services. According to Universities UK, higher education institutions have incurred a net loss of £1.4 billion, while local authority debt has escalated to £122 billion, as reported by BBC analysis.
The urgency of this alliance is underscored by a recent survey conducted by Key Cities, which revealed that 60% of councils are considering selling assets to sustain vital services, including adult and children’s social care. This financial landscape highlights the critical need for innovative solutions to support public services and local economies.
Collaboration at the Forefront
The inaugural i-PLACE 25 conference, held on November 26-27, 2023, brought together representatives from universities, local councils, and industry leaders to explore new avenues for growth. Organised by the Key Cities Innovations Network, the conference featured a keynote address by Audra Gill, Head of Creative Industries at the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). She discussed significant partnership-based funding opportunities, underscoring the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders.
During the event, Prof. Joe Yates, Vice-Chancellor of Wrexham University, emphasized that collaboration is essential in overcoming challenges facing both regions and educational institutions. He stated, “At Wrexham University, our 2030 strategy is rooted in the belief that collaboration unlocks solutions for communities.” He continued, “Through the Key Cities Innovation Network, we are proud to work alongside civic partners to drive inclusive growth and create opportunities that matter locally and nationally.”
Similarly, Prof. Nic Beech, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Salford and Vice Chair of the Key Cities Innovation Network, expressed his pride in the university’s role as a foundation partner for the conference. He noted, “Innovation can supercharge growth and opportunity across the UK. It’s something that runs through our DNA at Salford and plays a key role in our University Strategy, Innovating to Enrich Lives.”
Building a Network for Future Growth
The Key Cities Innovation Network comprises members from 24 towns and cities, alongside numerous universities including Bath Spa, Bradford, Coventry, Essex, Lancaster, Lincoln, Plymouth, South Wales, Southampton, and Wrexham. The collective aims to foster partnerships that can lead to innovative solutions addressing the pressing issues faced by local communities.
Support for the i-PLACE 25 conference also came from various partners, including Arts Council England, Connected Places Catapult, Arup, MediaCityUK, GM Business Growth Hub, the BEYOND Conference, the University of Salford, and Salford City Council. Their collaboration reflects a shared commitment to enhancing the economic and social landscape across the UK.
The ongoing dialogue among universities, local authorities, and industry stakeholders is crucial for addressing the challenges that threaten essential services and for ensuring a sustainable future for communities. As the financial landscape continues to evolve, the push for nearly £1 billion in funding represents a significant step towards fostering resilience and opportunity in the face of adversity.
