Health Concerns Surround Putin During Trump Summit in Alaska

The recent summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska has reignited concerns regarding the Russian President’s health. Observers closely monitored Putin’s physical condition during the meeting held on March 9, 2024, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Despite the Kremlin’s persistent denials, unusual behavior from Putin has led to heightened speculation and scrutiny.

Footage from the event revealed Putin descending the aircraft stairs slowly, pausing midway. Upon stepping onto the red carpet, he appeared to limp. During the brief public appearance with Trump, he was seen flexing his knees repeatedly and shifting his feet, prompting Ukrainian media to question his health. The Times of Ukraine noted, “Attention — Putin’s legs. What is wrong with them?”

In addition, a Telegram channel known as Nevzorov remarked on his legs being “shaking,” humorously suggesting that “maybe his shoes are tight.” Some observers speculated that Putin may have been using height-boosting inserts to match Trump’s 6ft 3in stature. Fringe theories even suggested he might be wearing a lightweight exoskeleton, with Crimean Wind claiming that “something resembling a light exoskeleton was noticed in the outfit of the Russian dictator.” The approximately 20 centimeters (or 8 inches) height difference between the two leaders was reportedly less noticeable in video footage.

During a subsequent press session, journalists questioned Putin about ceasefires and civilian deaths in Ukraine. His response seemed flustered, with Putin raising his voice and shouting at reporters, while Trump remained silent. Both leaders claimed “progress” without offering specific details. Meanwhile, European officials underscored that Russia cannot block Ukraine’s NATO or EU membership, despite Russian media portraying the summit as a victory for Moscow.

Rumors regarding Putin’s health have circulated for several years. The General SVR Telegram channel claimed he required a special cushion during long meetings following a “proctological operation” after a fall at his official residence. They also alleged that he used “special underwear that retains liquids and odours” and often leaned on tables for support.

Some videos from Security Council meetings raised suspicions, showing officials dressed identically on different days, leading to further speculation about Putin’s health. Investigative reports indicated that between 2016 and 2019, Putin traveled with a thyroid cancer surgeon, contributing to ongoing concerns about his well-being. Observers have noted what they describe as fidgety behavior, facial bloating, and an unsteady gait.

While the summit itself yielded no significant breakthroughs, Putin’s movements, pauses, and posture drew immediate attention. These observations, combined with reports of past surgeries and potential cancer treatments, have once again placed the spotlight on the Russian president’s health and its implications for the country’s leadership. As discussions surrounding his condition continue, the international community remains watchful of how these factors may influence Russia’s political landscape.
