Coles Launches Easter Hot Cross Buns Early, Stirring Mixed Reactions
Coles has made headlines by launching its Easter hot cross buns on December 26, 2025, just one day after Christmas. The supermarket chain anticipates selling more than two million packs of these seasonal treats before New Year’s Day. While this decision has sparked a debate among shoppers, Coles aims to use this festive offering to support a charitable cause.
The hot cross buns will be available in various flavors, including the traditional variety, chocolate, apple and cinnamon, and mini fruit options. Additionally, Coles has introduced the unique Arnott’s Iced VoVo hot cross buns, a twist on the classic Australian biscuit. The price for these buns is set at $4.50 for a pack or $8 for two packs, both in-store and online. Importantly, Coles will donate 20 cents from each pack sold to the children’s cancer charity Redkite.
Community Reactions to Early Release
The early release of hot cross buns has elicited mixed reactions from consumers. Some shoppers expressed excitement, with one stating, “About time, I’ve been waiting since April for them to make a return.” Another added humorously, “HURRY! The sooner we eat them all, the sooner we can get back into Christmas.”
Conversely, others voiced their disapproval, emphasizing the importance of celebrating each holiday in its own time. One shopper remarked, “I refuse to buy them. Let us enjoy each holiday before we’re being pushed into the next one.” The range of opinions reflects the ongoing debate about holiday commercialization and consumer readiness for seasonal products.
Supporting Families in Need
Brad Gorman, Coles’ General Manager of Commercial, Bakery, Dairy & Frozen, highlighted the significance of the early launch. He stated, “Aussies have made hot cross buns a post-Christmas favourite, and we’re proud to turn that tradition into meaningful support for families who need to navigate the reality of childhood cancer.”
Coles has partnered with Redkite for over a decade, raising more than $55 million to support families affected by childhood cancer. This initiative has provided crucial assistance to families like that of nine-year-old Dakoda, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia shortly before her fourth birthday. After years of treatment, Dakoda is now in remission and enjoying a normal childhood.
Dakoda’s mother, Michelle, shared her appreciation for Redkite’s support. She said, “Redkite has been a constant support, letting us focus on Dakoda’s health without worrying about everything else. The impact of cancer is like a full-time job, and it’s a huge comfort to know Coles and its customers are supporting families like ours.”
Monique Keighery, Chief Executive Officer of Redkite, emphasized the importance of Coles’ contribution to their mission. She stated, “Their commitment ensures that families facing the realities of childhood cancer have access to the support they need during what can be one of the toughest times of their lives.”
Every purchase of Coles hot cross buns will directly aid families navigating the challenges of childhood cancer, ensuring they feel supported and not alone. The promotion runs until January 1, 2026, further integrating community spirit into the holiday season.
