The Jobcentre in Inverness announced plans to expand its services following a year of significant success in assisting job seekers. Over the past year, the centre has helped hundreds of individuals secure employment, and it aims to create even more opportunities in 2026. This announcement comes ahead of a special event known as the Movement to Work Programme, scheduled to run from January 20 to 23, 2026.

The Movement to Work Programme is designed to offer participants valuable insights and hands-on activities that demonstrate what it is like to work for local employers. The Jobcentre emphasized that the initiative aims to build confidence and enhance employability skills, helping individuals take proactive steps toward future employment opportunities.

Reflecting on the achievements of the past year, Lesley MacFadyen, the employer and partnership manager at the Jobcentre, stated, “It’s been a busy year at our Jobcentre, with our team pulling out all the stops to connect jobseekers with opportunities and businesses with the right employees.” MacFadyen highlighted the importance of forging new business partnerships, including some that have led to on-site recruitment, and hosting well-attended job fairs.

Special initiatives targeting young people and individuals over 50 have been particularly successful. The Jobcentre has developed strong relationships with local businesses, such as Eastgate Shopping Centre, Whitbread, The Crown Group, Meallmore Ltd, and Balfour Beatty. These collaborations have facilitated faster and more effective job placements.

Looking forward, the Jobcentre announced that there are currently hundreds of vacancies listed on the Find a Job website, covering a wide range of sectors, including hospitality and healthcare. The commitment to expanding services aims to assist even more individuals in finding fulfilling employment.

“Our Movement to Work programmes, sector-based work academies, and connections with our partner organizations at our community hub are focused on equipping young people with the confidence, skills, and support they need to seize their next opportunity,” MacFadyen added. She encouraged job seekers to take advantage of resources available, such as CV advice and interview tips, saying, “If you’re ready to start your journey, your next opportunity could be just around the corner.”

The announcement follows a report from the UK government indicating that more than 350,000 people are now in work this year. Pat McFadden, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, remarked on the progress, stating, “There are over 350,000 more people in work this year, and the rate of inactivity is at its joint lowest in over five years.”

Despite these encouraging figures, McFadden acknowledged the challenges that remain in the labor market, stating, “That is why we are investing £1.5 billion to deliver 50,000 apprenticeships and 350,000 new workplace opportunities for young people.” Additionally, the government has appointed Alan Milburn to lead an investigation into youth inactivity in the workforce, aiming to address deeper issues within the labor market.

As the Jobcentre in Inverness moves forward with its expansion plans, it continues to play a crucial role in connecting local job seekers with opportunities and supporting the community in building a more robust workforce.
