Nationwide Building Society has reassured its customers regarding the future of its physical branches, stating there will be no closures for at least the next several years. The mutual currently operates 605 Nationwide branches and 91 Virgin Money branches, a result of its acquisition of Virgin Money in 2024. Amid a trend of banks reducing their in-person presence, the society emphasized its commitment to maintaining its branch network.

In a message displayed prominently in various branch windows, Nationwide declares, “We’re staying put.” This statement aligns with the group’s recent announcement that all 696 branches will remain operational until at least the start of 2030. The assurance comes at a time when many customers are concerned about the future of in-person banking.

Future of Branch Banking

Nationwide has highlighted that it serves as the sole savings provider in 133 local areas where it is the only remaining branch. This emphasizes the importance of its physical presence in communities. The society noted on its website, “Keeping our branches open is one of the reasons we were awarded Which? Banking Brand of the Year 2025.” The group stated that any potential branch closures would only occur under circumstances beyond their control and would be executed only as a last resort.

Debbie Crosbie, CEO of Nationwide Building Society, expressed confidence in the importance of branches. “Our customers can be confident that they can bank with us whichever way they choose,” Crosbie said. “Branches are important to our customers, to communities, and to the health of our high streets. That’s why Nationwide will continue to keep branches open in addition to our investment in online and telephone channels.”

Innovative Support Services

Nationwide also provides unique services within its branches aimed at addressing specific community needs. Notably, 200 branches feature dementia clinics where customers can receive confidential appointments with specialist dementia nurses from Admiral Nurses. These clinics offer expert advice and emotional support to individuals affected by dementia.

In addition, 400 branches have established safe spaces, designed to provide refuge for individuals experiencing domestic abuse. These private areas allow customers to rest, explore their options, and access necessary support safely and confidentially.

As of November 12, 2025, the society continues to play a pivotal role in communities across the country, reassuring customers that their access to local banking services remains secure.
