Nationwide Reveals Spending Insights as Customers Face Financial Challenges
Nationwide Building Society has shared insights from its latest research, revealing how customers plan to manage their finances as they face significant expenditures. The study, which surveyed 1,200 customers, found that individuals are preparing to spend an average of £5,517 annually, even as they navigate increasing household bills.
A notable 41 percent of consumers expressed a desire to treat themselves this year, despite the financial pressures that many are experiencing. In contrast, 27 percent reported postponing substantial purchases, such as new vehicles or large-scale home renovations. The research also highlighted that 15 percent of respondents are concerned about potential unexpected expenses.
Shifts in Spending Habits
The survey indicated a shift in consumer spending habits, with 31 percent planning to reduce expenditures on dining out. Many are opting for home-cooked meals more frequently, a choice made by 24 percent of those surveyed. Additionally, 26 percent aim to cut back on fashion and clothing purchases, while 24 percent intend to buy more second-hand items as a cost-saving measure.
Travel remains a high priority for consumers, with the research indicating that in 2026, individuals plan to allocate an average of £5,517 on long trips and £2,348 on short trips. EasyJet forecasts that in 2025, British holidaymakers will spend approximately £3,051.90 on their main vacation.
Mark Nalder, Service, Operations & Performance Director at Nationwide Building Society, commented on the findings, stating, “Undoubtedly, some consumers are putting off bigger purchases and replacing them with manageable luxuries due to financial worries or constraints. There is a degree of practicality to this as it balances enjoyment with caution.”
Financial Planning and Savings
The research also emphasized the importance of budgeting in the current economic climate. Approximately 20 percent of respondents indicated plans to establish a monthly budget, while 18 percent will utilise banking apps to track their spending in 2026. Nalder highlighted that saving should be a priority for customers, noting that the Nationwide app offers a convenient and secure way to manage both current and savings accounts.
As financial pressures mount, these insights from Nationwide underline the evolving landscape of consumer spending and the strategies individuals are adopting to balance enjoyment with financial responsibility.
