Poundland Closes Store Today, Eight More Set to Shut by February

Discount retailer Poundland is closing one of its stores today, with plans to shut an additional eight locations before February. This significant reduction is part of a broader strategy to restructure the company, which has already seen over 100 stores close since mid-2025. The brand’s challenges intensified after its acquisition for just £1 by the investment firm Gordon Brothers.

The store closures come as Poundland grapples with declining shopper numbers despite its focus on affordability. The closures scheduled before February include shops in various locations, with potential discounts of up to 40% at affected sites. The following stores are confirmed to close:

– Dorchester – January 18
– Plymstock – January 20
– Bearwood, Smethwick – January 23
– Cameron Toll, Edinburgh – January 20
– Nottingham Eastpoint, Nottinghamshire – January 22
– Lymington, Hampshire – January 23
– Christchurch, High Street, Dorset – January 23
– Gosport – January 29

In February, another five locations will also cease operations.

The retail sector has been under considerable strain, with business rates often cited as a primary concern. In the recent autumn budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced reduced multipliers for retail, hospitality, and leisure properties. However, the budget also confirmed the end of a temporary business rates discount that had been in place since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Poundland struggles, other retail entities are experiencing growth. For instance, Games Workshop reported record half-year sales, benefiting from increased online and in-store transactions, operating from 575 stores globally, including 134 in the UK.

Poundland’s restructuring plan aims to reduce its number of stores from approximately 800 to between 650 and 700 by early 2026. This approach reflects the company’s efforts to adapt to the challenging retail environment and secure its future in the market.
