UK Pubs Face Crisis as One Closes Daily; Industry Calls for Action
The British pub industry is in turmoil, with new statistics revealing that an average of one pub closed permanently every day in 2025. A total of 366 establishments were either demolished or repurposed, prompting calls from industry leaders for urgent financial assistance to prevent further closures. The situation is compounded by an impending increase in business rates set to take effect in April 2026.
As reported by The Sun, around 1,000 landlords, including noted television personality Jeremy Clarkson, who owns The Farmer’s Dog in Oxfordshire, have joined the “Taxed Out” campaign. This initiative aims to urge the Labour Party to reconsider proposed tax increases in the upcoming budget.
Industry research indicates that the changes to business rates could cost the average pub an additional £12,900 over the next three years, even with government support. Despite a £400 million support package reportedly being prepared by the Treasury, industry advocates argue that more targeted relief is necessary.
Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, stated, “Many of these closures are totally unnecessary. It’s never been more vital for a pub-specific business rates relief which could prevent more closures and more job losses.”
The stark reality is echoed by Kate Nicholls of UKHospitality, who highlighted the significant job losses and shattered dreams resulting from the growing number of closures. Earlier this week, reports indicated a looming “pub closure apocalypse” for 2026, following what campaigners termed a “bombshell” budget from Labour.
As business rates escalate, alcohol duties rise, and pubs receive no assistance with VAT or soaring energy costs, industry leaders warn that patrons may see even higher prices for a pint next year. Gary Timmins, Director of Pub and Club Campaigns at the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), criticized the Chancellor’s budget, calling it a “disgrace” that will further threaten the survival of pubs across the country.
With the industry facing numerous challenges, including increased employer National Insurance costs, the future of Britain’s pubs hangs in the balance. Without prompt and specific financial intervention, the number of closures is expected to continue rising, leaving communities without their local watering holes.
