Zipcar Confirms Closure of UK Operations, Affects 650,000 Drivers

Car-sharing service Zipcar has officially announced its decision to cease operations in the UK, a move that will impact approximately 650,000 drivers across the country. The US-based company, which provides hourly and longer-term vehicle rentals, communicated the suspension of new bookings to its UK customers on December 1, 2024, indicating that the pause would begin at the start of the new year.

The closure follows a formal consultation process with its 71 UK employees as the company grapples with ongoing financial challenges. In a recent email sent to users, Zipcar confirmed the cessation of its UK operations and provided details regarding account management. The email stated, “In accordance with clause 7.5 of the member terms, please take this as your written notice that we will formally close your account in 30 days.”

Customers have been advised that they will not be able to make new bookings during this period, although their accounts will remain active until February 16, 2026. Zipcar has assured users that they will receive a pro-rated refund for the remaining duration of any current plans or subscriptions, effective from the start of 2026. This refund process will be automatic, requiring no action from account holders.

Financial reports indicate that Zipcar’s UK operations experienced a significant downturn, with losses escalating to £5.7 million in 2024. This decline was attributed to a marked decrease in customer trips, prompting the company to reevaluate its presence in the UK market.
