Brandon Sanderson Critiques George R.R. Martin’s Dark Fantasy Realism

The literary landscape is currently abuzz as renowned fantasy author Brandon Sanderson has openly critiqued the philosophy behind George R.R. Martin‘s acclaimed series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Sanderson, known for his works such as The Mistborn series and for completing Robert Jordan‘s The Wheel of Time, expressed his concerns about the series’ relentless brutality and realism, especially as fans await the long-anticipated sixth novel, The Winds of Winter.

In a recent interaction on Reddit, Sanderson shared that while he acknowledges Martin’s talent as a writer, he found the experience of reading Game of Thrones “too much” for his nerves. His critique extends beyond the series’ violent themes; he questions the emotional manipulation that he perceives as a hallmark of Martin’s storytelling. Sanderson’s perspective is particularly compelling, as he is known for his “architect” writing style, which emphasizes meticulous planning and intricate world-building.

Sanderson stated, “I read the first book, and while I thought the writing was excellent… I found the experience too much for me.” He elaborated that the narrative felt more like an “exercise in emotional manipulation” rather than a natural progression of events. He critiqued Martin’s tendency to build characters up only to dismantle them in tragic ways, describing it as an “absolute art” but one that often leans towards pessimism.

As anticipation builds for the release of The Winds of Winter, currently projected for early 2026, questions arise about whether Martin will continue this trend of shock value or strive for a more grounded emotional narrative. Martin has indicated that he is still grappling with the manuscript, which is currently estimated at around 1,100 to 1,200 pages, leaving him with another 400 to 500 pages to complete.

In stark contrast to Sanderson’s viewpoint, Martin defends his work as a blend of fantasy and historical realism. In an interview with Time magazine, he explained that his narratives draw heavily from the gritty realities of the Middle Ages, a period he believes is often underrepresented in modern fantasy. He points to historical events such as the Wars of the Roses and the Glencoe Massacre as influences that shape his storytelling, particularly the infamous Red Wedding.

Martin suggests that his approach to killing off major characters is a necessary element that counters the predictability often found in the genre. “As much as I love historical fiction, my problem with historical fiction is that you always know what’s going to happen,” he stated. By intertwining fantasy with historical elements, he aims to maintain suspense, which he believes is essential to engaging readers.

The philosophical divide between these authors also highlights why Sanderson would hesitate to complete Martin’s work, should it become necessary. He describes Martin’s themes as “fundamentally pessimistic,” and prefers narratives that, despite darkness, contain a “spark of hope.” In contrast, the conclusion of the Game of Thrones television series left many viewers feeling despondent, suggesting that the forthcoming The Winds of Winter may follow a similarly dark trajectory.

Despite the challenges he faces, Martin remains committed to completing his saga, stating that abandoning it now would feel like a “total failure.” He has acknowledged the delays and has recently expressed frustration at the “rude” speculation regarding his health from impatient fans.

As the literary world anticipates the release of The Winds of Winter, the divergent views of Sanderson and Martin raise intriguing questions about the future of fantasy literature and the narrative choices that will define it.
