Coronation Street’s Julia Goulding Reveals Crossover Filming Insights
Julia Goulding, known for her role as Shona Platt on Coronation Street, has shared her experiences from the set of the highly anticipated crossover event with Emmerdale, titled “Corriedale.” This historic collaboration marks the first time both of ITV’s iconic soap operas will unite for a special episode, set to air on January 5, 2026, at 20:00 GMT.
The crossover is part of ITV’s new scheduling strategy, which will introduce a “soap power hour” from Monday to Friday. This initiative will see Emmerdale airing its episodes at 20:00, followed by Coronation Street at 20:30. To celebrate this change, production teams crafted a gripping narrative that intertwines characters from both shows in a dramatic storyline that unfolds through a multi-vehicle accident.
Filming took place over several weeks, primarily during nighttime shoots, which presented unique challenges for the cast. Goulding expressed her excitement about being part of such a special event, stating, “It was a massive privilege to be a part of it because obviously not everybody got to be.”
The episode’s plot revolves around a catastrophic crash on a country road near the village of Hotten, leaving characters from both soaps in peril as they await emergency assistance. Among those in danger are David and Shona, who faces a complicated pregnancy with her unborn child diagnosed with a tumor.
While discussing the filming conditions, Goulding noted that despite the late hours, the experience was enjoyable. “You know what, it wasn’t that bad! We had five weeks of night shoots,” she remarked, adding that camaraderie among cast members helped ease the fatigue.
The challenges of portraying a pregnant character added another layer of complexity for Goulding. “Wearing that pregnancy suit wasn’t fun, because it’s very heavy,” she admitted, indicating that the costume contributed to a strained neck after weeks of filming. Despite such difficulties, she praised the catering team for providing exceptional meals, which kept morale high during late-night shoots.
As the air date approaches, Goulding anticipates viewer reactions. “This is a world we’ve never been in before,” she observed, suggesting that even viewers unfamiliar with one of the soaps will find the crossover accessible and engaging. Her eagerness to learn about ongoing storylines in Emmerdale highlights the shared excitement among cast members. “I can’t wait to find out what’s happening with Charity [Dingle],” she said, referring to another prominent character.
The collaboration between Coronation Street and Emmerdale represents a significant moment in British television, promising to captivate audiences with its thrilling narrative and the intertwining of beloved characters from both shows. As fans await the launch of “Corriedale,” the excitement among the cast and crew reflects the potential for this unique event to leave a lasting impression on viewers.
