Doug Liman’s “Killing Satoshi” Explores AI in Film Production
Filmmaker Doug Liman is set to push the boundaries of technology in cinema with his upcoming film, “Killing Satoshi.” This cryptocurrency-themed conspiracy thriller, featuring stars Casey Affleck and Pete Davidson, delves into the mystery surrounding Satoshi Nakamoto, the enigmatic creator of Bitcoin. The film aims to unveil the secrets of an elite cabal intent on preventing the truth from coming to light.
In a notable departure from traditional filmmaking, the production will utilize advanced technology for performance capture. According to a casting notice published by Variety, actors will perform on a “markerless performative capture stage,” eschewing conventional locations in favor of innovative artificial intelligence methods. This approach reflects a growing trend in the industry as filmmakers look to harness AI to enhance storytelling.
The producers of “Killing Satoshi” have indicated that they plan to use generative AI and machine learning technologies to modify performances. This could include adjustments to facial expressions and body movements. However, they have committed to ensuring that AI will not be employed to create “recognisable and identifiable digital replicas” of actors without their explicit consent.
Ryan Kavanaugh, a producer on the project, emphasized their commitment to ethical practices in AI usage. “We were very cautious, sensitive and overly protective of our actors to make sure we only use performance capture AI,” he stated. This includes a firm stance against using AI-generated characters that do not exist in reality, a consideration that is particularly relevant as the industry grapples with the implications of synthetic performances.
The conversation around AI in film is particularly pertinent as SAG-AFTRA engages in contract negotiations with major studios and streaming platforms. The issue of protections for actors’ likenesses and performances is a key topic in these discussions, reflecting broader concerns about the impact of technology on creative industries.
Filming for “Killing Satoshi” is expected to commence in the coming weeks in the UK, marking an exciting chapter for Liman and his crew. As the film industry evolves, the integration of AI technologies raises questions about the future of storytelling and the ethical implications of these advancements.
