Fiona Hughes, a contestant on the hit reality show The Traitors, shared insights into her strategy for selecting her murder shortlist during a recent interview on BBC Radio 2‘s The Scott Mills Breakfast Show. The 62-year-old from Swansea described her experience on the show as “wonderful,” noting that her choices were based on her perceptions of the other contestants’ loyalty.

As a secret traitor, Hughes operated under the guise of a red cloak, keeping her identity hidden from both the other players and the audience. Chosen by host Claudia Winkleman in the show’s opening episode, Hughes had the unique role of determining which players would be targeted for elimination. She eventually faced banishment after her attempt to remove a fellow traitor led to her being identified as a primary suspect.

Hughes elaborated on her decision-making process, stating, “I thought they were the three most faithful, and that’s why their names were on the list.” She selected fellow contestants Netty, Ben, and Maz for her shortlist, describing them as having “faithful written all over them.” Her praise for her fellow participants highlighted their positive attributes: “Netty was fantastic, she’s so friendly, beautiful, and open-hearted. Ben, a veteran, was clever. And Maz, his whole aura was one of love and peace.”

Reflecting on the dramatic moments leading to her exit, Hughes humorously referred to herself as a “plonker” for her miscalculation. She expressed her excitement at watching the show from home, especially as her fellow traitors tried to deduce her identity. “We had a watch party here for the final episode when they booted me out,” Hughes shared, adding that her family, who joined her for the occasion, contributed to the lively atmosphere.

Despite her relatively short time on the show, spanning only six episodes, Hughes felt a strong connection to the experience. “It felt like I had been there a lifetime. It was a wonderful experience,” she remarked.

Fans of The Traitors can continue to follow the series, which airs on BBC One and iPlayer, with the next episode scheduled for January 14, 2024, at 20:00. As the tension builds, viewers can expect more twists and turns in this gripping competition.
