James Norton Exits James Bond Contention, Citing Age Concerns
James Norton, a prominent name in the ongoing speculation surrounding the next James Bond, has officially ruled himself out of consideration for the iconic role. In a recent interview, the actor, who celebrated his 40th birthday this summer, expressed his belief that he is “too old” to take on the character following Daniel Craig‘s departure after the release of No Time To Die in 2021.
With the announcement of Denis Villeneuve as the director and Steven Knight as the screenwriter, excitement has grown about the future of the franchise, yet no new actor has been cast as the next 007. Norton’s comments come amidst growing anticipation for who will step into the role that has captivated audiences for decades.
In his interview, Norton reflected on the life-altering implications of being cast as Bond. He stated, “It is a difficult decision as it will change your life.” Although he acknowledged the potential for skyrocketing success, he also noted that such fame could come at a cost, stating, “I like the fact I can leave my house and go down to the shop.”
Despite the whirlwind of speculation regarding various actors, Norton emphasized the lack of formal conversations about the role, calling the ongoing rumors “nonsense.” He humorously compared the situation to a betting scenario in Wolverhampton, where speculation seems to run unchecked.
As for the future of the Bond franchise, insiders have suggested that casting will not commence until after Villeneuve completes his work on Dune: Part Three, which is set for release in December 2026. This means fans may have to wait until 2027 for the next installment to begin filming, with a potential release not expected until 2028.
Numerous actors have been rumored to be in contention for the role, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Taron Egerton, Tom Holland, Aaron Pierre, Jack Lowden, and Jacob Elordi. Insiders indicate that Villeneuve is searching for a “fresh face” to take on the role, emphasizing the need for a British male actor.
A source familiar with the casting process stated, “Whoever it is has to look like he could kill you with his bare hands in a trice.” The aim is to present a new Bond, marking a fresh start for the beloved franchise. The script is reportedly leaning towards a storyline that revisits the origins of the character.
As the excitement surrounding Bond continues to build, Norton may be moving on to new projects. He hinted at a mystery role that he is slated to begin in the autumn, although details remain under wraps.
As fans eagerly await official casting news, the search for the next 007 appears to be an extensive and careful process, one that will ultimately redefine the future of the franchise.
