John Lydon Reveals Silence from Sex Pistols After Wife’s Death
John Lydon, the former frontman of the Sex Pistols, has expressed disappointment over his bandmates’ lack of communication following the death of his wife, Nora Forster. She passed away in April 2023 after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s disease, during which Lydon served as her full-time caregiver. In an interview with The Times, he revealed that he expected some form of support from his former colleagues but received none.
“I expected some kind of connection when Nora died, but nothing,” Lydon stated, highlighting the estrangement he has felt from Steve Jones, Glen Matlock, and Paul Cook. His emotional remarks come at a time when he is channeling his grief into a new album with his band, Public Image Ltd., which he describes as “raucous.”
Reflecting on the impact of his wife’s illness, Lydon noted how her fight against Alzheimer’s profoundly affected him. “All the things I thought were the ultimate agony seem preposterous now,” he said. “It’s shaped me into what I am. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it. I don’t see how I can live without her. I wouldn’t want to. There’s no point.”
Fractured Relationships Within the Band
Relations between Lydon and his former bandmates have been strained in recent years, particularly following their decision to tour without him. Lydon criticized the band’s choice to hire Frank Carter, the former frontman of Gallows, to fill his role. “It’s almost malicious in its intent,” he told NME last year, describing the situation as akin to “karaoke.”
He expressed frustration over the band’s lack of new material, saying, “The Three Stooges in that band have had how many years to write some new songs? That’s what I’d like to hear.” Lydon has consistently emphasized his commitment to the integrity and authenticity of the punk genre, lamenting the “dumbing down” of the band’s original spirit.
In comments made in May, he reiterated his position on the new lineup. “Of course, it’s karaoke, but it’s like… Come on, Mr. Carter, you’re not Johnny Rotten, I am,” he remarked, suggesting that while he respects Carter, the essence of the band has changed.
Future Endeavors and New Music
Despite the tensions, Matlock hinted in October at the possibility of creating new music with Carter. “Everyone has ideas, but we’re very busy at the moment and haven’t had a chance to really work things out,” he stated. In a separate interview, Jones acknowledged the challenges of producing new material, suggesting that audiences might not be receptive to new songs. “When was the last time you heard a good Rolling Stones song?” he asked rhetorically.
Meanwhile, Lydon continues to focus on his own projects. His band, Public Image Ltd., is currently on an extension of their “This Is Not The Last Tour” in the UK. Fans can find remaining tickets available for upcoming shows.
As Lydon navigates his grief and the complexities of his past, his journey reflects not only the challenges of loss but also the evolving dynamics within one of punk rock’s most iconic bands.
