When the PRS USA-made Core Silver Sky was launched in 2018, it marked more than just the debut of a signature model for John Mayer. This collaboration sought to redefine the iconic Fender Strat, a beloved instrument played by legends such as Jeff Beck and David Gilmour. Mayer and Paul Reed Smith aimed to create a fresh, innovative guitar that would resonate with musicians and fans alike.

Mayer’s philosophy surrounding the Silver Sky is clear. As Paul Reed Smith noted, “He’s not messing around. If he had a guitar that he liked better, he would use it.” The Silver Sky, available in both Core and SE versions, has garnered significant acclaim since its release. Beyond its commercial success, Mayer emphasizes its authenticity: “I’m so glad I don’t have to pretend to love them. I can’t outplay it. That’s the dream.”

As the Silver Sky continues to thrive in the market, its acceptance among guitarists has evolved. Mayer acknowledges this gradual shift, stating, “I knew the Silver Sky would take years to take its place in the world. I say this cautiously, but it feels like it’s become pretty widely accepted.” He believes that even those who may not appreciate the guitar can recognize its right to exist within the musical landscape.

The Silver Sky has proven to be a bestseller, prompting PRS to introduce a more affordable SE version, making the instrument accessible to a wider audience. Its recognition extends beyond sales figures; it has been included in the list of the 50 most important pieces of gear in the past 25 years. Mayer expressed his aspiration: “The ultimate dream is to see it in the hands of people who don’t even consider themselves a fan of my music. That’s how you know you’ve created something worthwhile.”

Mayer considers the Silver Sky one of his proudest accomplishments. He aimed to design an instrument that musicians could truly connect with. “The guitar is usually referred to as a Silver Sky without my name attached. I love that,” he explained. “My favorite thing is to see how other guitarists use it to express themselves.”

In their collaboration, Mayer and Smith meticulously worked on every aspect of the guitar. Smith shared, “We spent a huge amount of time on the headstock shape, pickguard shape and body. There wasn’t anything that was left untouched until John was happy.” The duo retooled knobs, the jack plate, pickup covers, and even the magnets to achieve the desired sound and feel.

Mayer had specific ideas about how he wanted the guitar to sound. “I wanted to sound like I’ve been known to sound, but with a little less midrange dip,” he said. As he has matured as a musician, he has grown to appreciate a broader midrange.

Smith recounted a pivotal moment during the soundcheck of a Silver Sky prototype. He and Mayer compared it to Mayer’s vintage 1964 Strat used on the hit song “Gravity.” Smith observed that the Strat’s pickups produced 6dB more bass and had a different tonal quality. This revelation prompted Smith to take the bass pickup from the Strat and analyze it, leading to critical adjustments in the Silver Sky’s design.

The neck profile was another area of focus. Mayer noted that before designing the Silver Sky, he did not fully understand the significance of neck radius. “The difference between 7.25” and 9.5” is less significant than your strap being an inch higher or lower,” he stated. This understanding allowed him to advocate for a neck that felt perfect for his playing style.

Reflecting on the Silver Sky’s widespread appeal, Mayer concluded, “I think it’s because I really play them. I designed a guitar that I track-tested. It’s like a sports car that can hug a turn at 100 mph.”

As Mayer and Smith continue to witness the impact of the Silver Sky, their collaboration stands as a testament to the power of innovation in music. The guitar has not only redefined expectations but has also sparked creativity among musicians around the world.
