Matthew from The Traitors Plans to Marry Partner with Prize Money

As the new series of The Traitors launches, contestant Matthew has shared his hopes for the prize money, revealing plans to marry his partner, Jason. The series, which premiered on January 1, 2024, features contestants navigating a game of deception and strategy at a castle, competing to outwit each other. Matthew stands out as the first contestant from Northern Ireland and is eager to showcase his competitive spirit.

Matthew, a 35-year-old creative director residing in Edinburgh, expressed his determination to win. Describing himself as “really competitive,” he noted his extensive experience in sports and games. “I’m not overly emotional, and I really want to be a Traitor,” he stated, emphasizing his ability to separate his personal values from the game’s demands. He also highlighted his willingness to make tough decisions for the sake of victory.

In discussing his approach to the game, Matthew emphasized that he does not see morality as a factor. “There’s no morality in this at all,” he remarked. “We all know that we’re entering a game.” His strategy includes identifying potential Traitors if he assumes the role of a Faithful, indicating a clear and calculated mindset as he approaches each episode.

Matthew has openly identified as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and is among several queer contestants who have participated in the show. Previous seasons featured contestants like Theo Mayne and Leanne Quigley, with Quigley notably using her winnings to fund IVF treatments. Matthew’s intentions with the prize money, however, are more personal. He plans to use it to finance his wedding to Jason, with whom he became engaged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reflecting on his campaign for marriage equality in Northern Ireland, which was only legalized in 2020, Matthew stated, “I didn’t think that I wanted to get married, but now I feel like I do.” He believes that sharing this story during the game could create a compelling narrative. “It’s not cool to go against the gay who wants to get married,” he added, indicating his desire to make a memorable impression.

If successful in the competition, Matthew envisions a wedding on his family farm in Northern Ireland, further rooting his personal journey in his hometown. “So having campaigned for marriage equality in Northern Ireland, I think that’s a better story for the last Round Table if I get there,” he noted.
