“Me Before You Climbs Netflix Charts After Re-Release”
Netflix’s recent addition of the emotional romantic drama Me Before You has propelled the film to third place on its charts, achieving remarkable popularity shortly after its re-release. Data from FlixPatrol shows that the film now ranks alongside box office hits such as Madagascar and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Originally released in 2016, Me Before You stars Sam Claflin, known for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean, and Emilia Clarke, famed for her performance in Game of Thrones. The film, adapted from Jojo Moyes‘ 2012 novel of the same name, tells the poignant story of Will Traynor and Lou Clark. The narrative follows Lou, played by Clarke, as she transitions through various jobs to support her family, ultimately becoming the caregiver for Will, a wealthy banker left paralyzed after an accident.
Film Overview and Cast
The film explores themes of love and personal growth. As Lou’s cheerful demeanor begins to alter Will’s bleak outlook on life, the two forge a deep connection that alters both of their lives in profound ways. In addition to Claflin and Clarke, the film features a notable cast including Charles Dance, Janet McTeer, Brendan Coyle, and Vanessa Kirby, among others, each contributing to the film’s emotional depth.
Despite achieving a 55% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, audience reception has been significantly more favorable, with an approval rating of 73%. In a review for The Guardian, critic Vanessa Thorpe emphasized that the film resonates deeply with viewers, likening its impact to that of the original book, which has left many readers deeply affected.
Viewer reactions have varied, with some praising the film as “brilliant” and a “must-see,” while others have criticized its portrayal of disability. One viewer remarked, “I feel absolutely cleansed of negativity after watching this,” highlighting the film’s emotional resonance for many. Conversely, other opinions reflect a more critical stance, with one individual describing the film as “manipulative and over-the-top.”
Controversy and Criticism
The film has faced significant backlash, particularly from disability rights groups who argue that it perpetuates harmful stereotypes about disabled individuals. Critics assert that the narrative suggests disabled people are burdens to society and that the role of Will, portrayed by an able-bodied actor, fails to authentically represent the disabled community. Protests occurred during the film’s London premiere, with organizations like Not Dead Yet voicing strong opposition.
Ellen Clifford, a representative of the group, stated in a 2016 interview with Buzzfeed that the film conveys a damaging message: “disability is tragedy, and disabled people are better off dead.” This narrative, she argued, reflects a prevalent societal view that marginalizes the experiences of those with disabilities.
As Me Before You continues to climb Netflix’s charts, its ability to spark both emotional connection and critical debate underscores its complex legacy. The film serves as a reminder of the diverse perspectives surrounding representations of love, loss, and disability in popular culture.
