Mickey Rourke Denounces GoFundMe for Eviction Relief
Actor Mickey Rourke has publicly distanced himself from a GoFundMe campaign that aimed to raise $100,000 to prevent his eviction due to unpaid rent. Rourke, 73, described the crowdfunding effort as “embarrassing” and stated that he does not want charity. The campaign, launched by Liya-Joelle Jones, claimed to have his consent and quickly gained traction, gathering nearly 97% of its goal within 48 hours.
In recent court filings, Rourke was issued a 30-day notice to pay almost $60,000 in back rent by his landlord, Eric Goldie. The documents indicated that Rourke owed $59,100 for rent on a three-bedroom property, which had a monthly rental rate that increased from $5,200 to $7,000 during his tenancy. Goldie is also seeking damages, attorney fees, and compensation for a rental agreement signed in March 2025.
The GoFundMe campaign was initiated in response to Rourke’s eviction notice, with Jones asserting that it was created with the actor’s full knowledge. However, Rourke’s response on social media contradicts this claim. “There’s only one person I can think of that would do such a thing,” he remarked on his Instagram account, expressing concern that the responsible party was someone close to him.
He emphasized that asking fans for money is not his style, stating, “I’d rather stick a gun up my ass and pull the trigger.” Rourke expressed frustration about the situation and indicated he had no involvement in the campaign. He also urged his supporters to withdraw their donations, affirming his desire to manage his affairs independently.
Rourke acknowledged that he has faced financial challenges and has borrowed money from friends but reiterated that he would never solicit funds from strangers or fans. He noted his own past mismanagement of his career and the emotional toll it has taken, revealing that he has undergone over 20 years of therapy to address these issues.
“I have done a very poor job in the management of my affairs,” he admitted, while expressing hope for a brighter future. Despite the current challenges, Rourke remains committed to his profession and is looking forward to resuming work. His stance reflects a desire for self-reliance, as he prefers to navigate his personal difficulties without community fundraising efforts.
This incident serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding celebrity finances and the potential for misunderstanding in the realm of public support. Rourke’s firm position illustrates his intent to maintain control over his life and career, emphasizing the importance of personal accountability in difficult times.
