President Tinubu Celebrates Nigerian Artists’ Success at AFRIMA
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed pride in Nigerian artists who triumphed at the 9th edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), showcasing the nation’s growing influence in the global music scene. The awards ceremony, held from January 7-11, 2026, in Lagos State, highlighted the achievements of various artists and the vibrant culture of Nigeria.
During this prestigious event, Nigerian artists delivered remarkable performances and garnered numerous accolades. Rema secured the title of Artiste of the Year, along with awards for Best Male Artiste in Western Africa and Best African RnB & Soul. Burna Boy took home Album of the Year, while Shallipopi won Song of the Year and Best African Collaboration for his work with Burna Boy. Additionally, Phyno was recognized as Best African Hip-Hop, Qing Madi was named Most Promising Artiste, and Yemi Alade received the award for Best Soundtrack. The ceremony also honored Chella as African Fans’ Favourite and presented the AFRIMA Legendary Award to Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye.
In a statement released on Thursday by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the artists for their contributions to Nigeria’s cultural reputation on a continental stage. He emphasized that their victories at AFRIMA reflect the strength, creativity, and resilience of Nigerian youth, further enhancing the country’s stature in African and global music.
Tinubu noted that the achievements of these artists are the culmination of years of dedication and talent. He stated, “Your success on this great continental stage is a proud moment for our nation and a strong reflection of the depth of talent, creativity and hard work that define Nigeria’s music industry.” He encouraged the artists to continue using their talents to inspire unity and pride while fostering growth in Nigeria’s creative economy.
The President also commended Lagos State, the official host city of AFRIMA, for delivering a world-class event. He praised the efforts of the Lagos State Government and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for creating a vibrant and safe environment for delegates, artists, and guests from across the continent. “I commend Lagos State for once again proving its capacity as Africa’s creative and entertainment capital,” he added.
Tinubu, who received the Pillar of Art and Culture in Africa Award from the African Union Commission in 2015, reiterated his administration’s commitment to empowering youth and developing the creative economy. He highlighted the potential of sectors like music, film, and fashion to create jobs, boost tourism, and significantly contribute to Nigeria’s economy.
“Culture is the soul of a people, and music remains one of Africa’s strongest voices,” he remarked. “Our government is fully committed to empowering young Nigerians and strengthening the creative economy.”
The All Africa Music Awards, established in 2014 by the International Committee of AFRIMA in collaboration with the African Union Commission, continues to be the largest award platform in Africa. This year, the event attracted over 1,216 artists, delegates, and industry stakeholders from at least 48 African countries, underscoring the awards’ continental reach and significance.
The 9th AFRIMA commenced on January 7 with a Welcome Soiree at the residence of the Deputy British High Commissioner, followed by the Africa Music Business Summit at the Eko Convention Centre. The festivities included a vibrant music village at Ikeja City Mall on January 9, featuring performances from over 25 top artists and drawing a crowd of more than 20,000 fans. The event culminated in a sold-out grand finale at the Eko Convention Centre, where outstanding creatives were awarded the prestigious 23.9-carat gold-plated AFRIMA trophy.
As Nigeria continues to make waves in the global music industry, the success of its artists at events like AFRIMA reinforces the nation’s cultural identity and creative potential.
