Snoop Dogg Celebrates Tennis Legacy, Remembers Ivan Lendl
Snoop Dogg, the renowned rapper and cultural icon, has expressed his admiration for tennis, particularly his fondness for former champion Ivan Lendl. During a recent appearance at the Paris Olympics, where he watched a thrilling match between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, Snoop reflected on his long-standing passion for the sport.
In a 2004 interview, Snoop Dogg surprised many when he revealed that tennis was among his favorite sports, naming Lendl as his all-time favorite player. He referred to Lendl as “the truth,” a testament to the Czech-American’s impact on the game. According to the BBC, Snoop described Lendl as “sharp” and an “old schooler” who made things happen on the court.
Lendl, who won an impressive total of 94 tour-level titles throughout his career, secured eight Grand Slam titles, including two Australian Opens, three French Opens, and three consecutive US Opens from 1985 to 1987. His remarkable achievements brought him close to a Career Grand Slam, finishing as a runner-up at Wimbledon in both 1986 and 1987.
Lendl’s Coaching Triumphs with Andy Murray
After his playing career, Lendl transitioned to coaching, where he found significant success with Andy Murray. Initially appointed in December 2011, Lendl guided Murray to his first two Grand Slam titles. Under Lendl’s mentorship, Murray won his maiden major at the US Open in 2012 and ended a 77-year drought for British men’s singles champions at Wimbledon in 2013.
The partnership concluded in 2014, but the two reunited in June 2016, allowing Murray to claim his second Wimbledon title and achieve the world number one ranking. Lendl’s coaching career also included a brief association with Alexander Zverev from 2018 to 2019, but they parted ways due to personal differences.
Recently, Lendl returned to assist Murray once more in 2022 as the Scot navigated the later stages of his career. However, their collaboration ended again in 2023. Throughout these years, Snoop Dogg’s admiration for Lendl has remained a notable aspect of his identity as a tennis fan.
Snoop Dogg’s enthusiasm for tennis serves as a reminder of the sport’s universal appeal, transcending genres and cultures. As he continues to support tennis, his recognition of legends like Lendl highlights the significant impact athletes have on fans across different fields.
