Steven Spielberg’s ‘Empire of the Sun’ Gains Recognition as a Classic
Regarded by many as a masterpiece, Empire of the Sun is experiencing a resurgence of interest years after its initial release. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film is celebrated for its captivating blend of spectacle, emotion, and intimate storytelling. Despite earning critical acclaim upon its 1987 release, the film struggled to find its footing at the box office. It was only later, through international distribution and home viewing, that it developed a loyal fan base.
Adapted from J.G. Ballard‘s semi-autobiographical novel, Empire of the Sun follows young Jamie “Jim” Graham, portrayed by a young Christian Bale in his first significant role. Set in pre-war Shanghai, Jim’s privileged life is upended when Japan invades and World War II engulfs China. Separated from his parents amid the chaos, Jim faces the harsh realities of survival in a Japanese internment camp.
While imprisoned, Jim forms complex relationships with other captives. One notable figure is Basie, played by John Malkovich, a charismatic American hustler. Additionally, Dr. Rawlins, a sympathetic British doctor portrayed by Nigel Havers, becomes a surrogate father figure to Jim. Through Jim’s perspective, the film poignantly explores themes of lost innocence, unexpected camaraderie, and the resilience of youth in wartime.
Critics have praised the film, with Kevin Maher, Chief Film Critic at the Times, describing it as Spielberg‘s “graduation to grown-up film-making.” The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus highlights the film as one of Spielberg’s most ambitious works of the 1980s, noting its status as an underrated gem.
Viewers echo this sentiment in various reviews. One Google reviewer, Stephanie Blurton, stated, “Really feel this movie is underrated, undervalued, and underwatched.” Another fan emphasized its lasting impact, noting, “This is one of my favourite films of all time. I’ve been watching it since it came out, and it’s just as good each time I see it.”
The film’s reputation continues to grow, with many praising its emotional depth and outstanding performances. An IMDb user awarded it a perfect score of 10/10, calling it “brilliant” and “amazing.” They added, “This is an amazingly underrated film that should be watched by a mature, attentive person.” Another viewer described it as a “visual masterpiece” and highlighted Bale’s extraordinary performance.
Despite existing in the shadow of Spielberg’s more commercially successful films, Empire of the Sun has emerged as a classic in its own right. Its exploration of the human condition during wartime and the triumph of the spirit resonates with audiences, ensuring its place in the annals of cinematic history. As more viewers discover this powerful story, its legacy as an underrated gem continues to solidify.
