Tess Daly Reflects on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Before Departure
Tess Daly, the beloved host of Strictly Come Dancing, has shared an emotional admission ahead of her departure from the popular BBC show. In a recent episode of the spin-off program It Takes Two, she expressed that the reality of her exit has yet to fully sink in, stating, “We’re not allowed to cry” during the final moments of their time on air.
Daly and co-host Claudia Winkleman stunned fans when they announced in October that they would be stepping down after the current series, marking the end of an era that began in 2014. Winkleman took over from the late Sir Bruce Forsyth, who co-hosted the original series alongside Daly since its inception in 2004.
Celebrating Two Decades of Memories
In an emotional farewell posted on Instagram, Tess Daly reflected on her remarkable journey with the show, stating, “After 21 unforgettable years, the time has come to say goodbye to Strictly Come Dancing. It’s hard to put into words what this show has meant to me.” She described the program as having felt like “a third child, a second family,” emphasizing the joy and community it has fostered over the years.
Daly noted that the show has always been about “joy, celebration, and bringing people together.” She expressed pride in having played a part in a phenomenon that has resonated with so many viewers. “It does feel like the right time to hand over the reins,” she added, while assuring fans that she would never truly say goodbye to the show’s signature glitter and sparkle.
During the special episode of It Takes Two, which aired on December 9, 2023, Daly and Winkleman reminisced about their experiences on the show. Tess described how the program has evolved since its modest beginnings in a small studio with minimal decorations. “When we first started, it was a lot smaller. The studio was tiny, there was literally one glitter curtain behind the judges, and that was it!” she recalled.
Looking Ahead to the Final Show
As the pair prepares for their final appearance on December 20, 2023, Daly mentioned the emotional weight of the occasion, saying, “I might get emotional.” Winkleman echoed these sentiments, asserting that while the focus would be on the winners of the current series, it would certainly be a bittersweet moment for them both. “But afterwards, we will hold each other very tight and cry. It’s a lot,” she said.
Throughout the episode, the duo engaged with fans and answered fun questions, reflecting on their favorite moments from their time on the show. The special also featured a heartfelt video message from Wilnelia Merced, the wife of Sir Bruce Forsyth, paying tribute to the legacy he left behind.
Strictly Come Dancing continues to be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, allowing fans to relive the magic of the series that has brought joy to millions around the globe.
