Wayne Lineker, the 63-year-old founder of O Beach Ibiza, recently opened up about a harrowing health scare that left him hospitalized for seven weeks due to severe pneumonia. The British entrepreneur’s frightening experience began during a flight from Dubai to the UK, where he had been visiting his daughter, Tia.

Shortly after arriving home, Lineker awoke in excruciating pain, fearing he was having a heart attack. He managed to call for an ambulance, which led to a four-week stay at Basildon & Thurrock University Hospital, where he battled chronic pneumonia.

Pneumonia, an inflammation of the lungs typically caused by bacterial or viral infections, can fill the air sacs with pus and fluid, making it difficult to breathe. Lineker’s condition was serious; he experienced two critical episodes during his hospital stay, prompting medical staff to warn his family about his precarious state. He recalled, “The doctor told my son I was in big danger and my blood pressure was ridiculously low.”

Facing Life and Death

Reflecting on his ordeal, Lineker described moments where he felt he might not survive. “There were two times I nearly passed away,” he shared. “It was a real eye opener for me. I became worried about my life. Am I going to make it?” During his hospitalization, he lost a significant amount of weight, dropping 11 kilograms, which left him feeling frail and unrecognizable to himself.

He noted that the health scare acted as a profound wake-up call. Just six months prior, Lineker had admitted himself into rehab to combat issues with alcohol and substance abuse. He believed that if he had not sought help, he might not have survived his pneumonia battle. He recounted the days of heavy drinking and drug use in Ibiza, describing a routine that involved waking up and heading straight to a bar for a vodka Red Bull.

His children, particularly his son Freddie, played a crucial role in his recovery. Freddie’s emotional plea for help after witnessing his father’s destructive behavior prompted Lineker to seek rehabilitation.

A Focus on Recovery

Now that he has been discharged from the hospital, Lineker is prioritizing his health. He plans to gradually improve his fitness by attending the gym and taking dietary supplements. His focus has shifted from running his beach club in Ibiza to recovery and sobriety. “I’m enjoying it, and it’s got a lot of benefits,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining a sober lifestyle.
