Zendaya’s Absence from ‘Euphoria’ EP Credits Sparks Speculation
Fans of HBO’s acclaimed series, ‘Euphoria’, are speculating about the future of Zendaya following her exclusion from the executive producer credits for the show’s upcoming third season. This omission, disclosed in a press release from Warner Bros Discovery, has raised questions about her role in the series, although she is confirmed to return as Rue Bennett. The new season is set to premiere on April 12, 2026.
Zendaya, who served as an executive producer for the first two seasons, is absent from the list of 13 executive producers for Season 3. This group includes notable figures such as creator Sam Levinson, Drake, and Adel “Future” Nur. The absence has ignited discussions online, with some fans suggesting it reflects a strategic retreat on Zendaya’s part, potentially distancing herself from controversies surrounding the show.
Industry insiders have noted a cooling relationship between Zendaya and Levinson, especially after his shift in focus to the short-lived series The Idol in 2023. Reports have surfaced indicating frustrations regarding delayed scripts and changing priorities, which may have strained their collaboration. As Zendaya’s star power continues to rise with roles in films like Dune and Challengers, she may be prioritizing her burgeoning career.
In 2022, Zendaya expressed interest in directing an episode for Season 3, but that plan appears to have faltered due to scheduling conflicts and production delays. Given the tumultuous journey of ‘Euphoria’ since its second season aired in 2022, this development is hardly unexpected.
Production Budget and Season Dynamics
The third season of ‘Euphoria’ boasts a substantial production budget, reportedly exceeding £148.9 million (approximately $200 million). This figure positions it as one of HBO’s most expensive projects to date, translating to roughly £18.6 million (about $25 million) per episode for the eight-part series. This budget increase is largely attributed to the rising salaries of the cast, which includes Zendaya, who commands £0.7 million (or $1 million) per episode due to her Emmy-winning status and box-office appeal.
Filming for the new season wrapped in November 2025, after commencing in February and utilizing Kodak 35mm and 65mm film to achieve a cinematic aesthetic—a first for narrative television at this scale. The storyline features a five-year time jump, shifting the narrative focus from high school to adulthood, with Rue in Mexico facing a significant debt of £7,444 (around $10,000) owed to drug dealer Laurie. Levinson describes this season as an exploration of life “out of the safety net of school,” addressing themes of faith, redemption, and moral complexity.
Recently released trailers hint at high-stakes drama, including developments in Cassie and Nate’s suburban marriage and Jules’ experiences in art school.
Future Speculations and Cast Dynamics
Speculation about Zendaya’s departure after Season 3 has circulated since 2023, with discussions on platforms like Reddit suggesting that creative differences may contribute to her exit. Although HBO has dismissed rumors regarding the cancellation of the series, insiders indicate that Zendaya’s packed schedule in 2026—encompassing five major projects—might limit her availability for future seasons.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding her role, Zendaya has expressed her affection for Rue Bennett, emphasizing the importance of “doing justice” to the character and her fans. In a recent interview, she acknowledged the intriguing prospect of seeing these characters navigate life outside of high school, underscoring her commitment to the series.
The ensemble cast remains consistent, featuring returning stars like Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi, along with new additions, including Sharon Stone and Rosalía. As production concludes and the premiere date approaches, Zendaya’s diminished behind-the-scenes involvement highlights evolving dynamics within ‘Euphoria’. While her future with the series remains uncertain, the show is poised to explore darker themes as it moves into early 2026.
