Eight-Year-Old Girl Discovers Family Dead from Toxic Gas
An eight-year-old girl named Maria Chelyshev was left orphaned after her entire family succumbed to toxic gas in their home in Laishevo, a town near Kazan in the Russian republic of Tatarstan. The tragic incident unfolded in 2014, when members of the Chelyshev family entered their cellar, where they were later found dead.
Maria’s father, Mikhail Chelyshev, a respected law professor aged 42, was the first to go into the basement. When he did not return, his wife, Anastasia Chelyshev, aged 38, went to investigate. She too was struck down by the same lethal fumes. Their 18-year-old son, Georgy Chelyshev, ventured in next, followed by Maria’s grandmother, Iraida Chelyshev, who was 68. All four family members died within a short period.
The girl discovered the bodies of her loved ones after they did not return from the cellar, leaving her to cope with the devastating loss alone. A local investigator commented, “They all died of gas poisoning which has accumulated in the basement as a result of badly rotting potatoes.” The toxic gas was linked to the decomposition of the potatoes stored in the cellar for winter.
According to reports, the family had not taken precautions regarding the storage of their potatoes, which can produce harmful compounds known as glycoalkaloids, specifically solanine and chaconine. These toxins can lead to severe health issues, including confusion and weakness. Although such poisoning is rare, the case highlights the importance of proper potato storage.
Experts from Michigan State University emphasize the need for vigilance when it comes to storing potatoes. They recommend keeping them in a cool, dark place and avoiding exposure to light during transport. “If you find or buy green potatoes, throw them out,” they advise. “Also avoid eating potatoes that are past their prime, have eyes growing on them, or show any signs of decay.”
This heartbreaking incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential dangers associated with improper food storage. Maria’s experience, shared online, resonated with many, with comments reflecting the shock and sadness at such a loss. One user remarked, “Imagine being a young child and watching your whole family walk into the basement one by one and not come out.”
In light of this tragedy, families are urged to take care when storing food, particularly perishables like potatoes, to prevent similar incidents. Always checking for signs of spoilage and ensuring proper ventilation in storage areas can significantly reduce risks.
