Enhance Pillow Freshness with This Simple Washing Tip
As winter approaches, many people may not realize that their bedding, especially pillows, can accumulate germs and unpleasant odors. According to laundry experts at Snowe Home, a common kitchen item can help keep pillows feeling fluffy and fresh.
The seasonal shift often leads to increased sweating, particularly when central heating is in use. Sweat contains moisture, oils, and salts that can seep into fabrics, resulting in a sour smell and the potential for bacteria growth. Over time, neglecting to wash pillows can cause them to become discolored and may lead to skin irritations or even mold growth.
Snowe Home emphasizes the importance of deep cleaning pillows approximately every six months. To effectively clean pillows, use a gentle detergent and warm water, but consider adding a cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle. This natural substance, known for its antibacterial properties due to the presence of acetic acid, works to dissolve oils, salts, and any mineral residue left by sweat.
The Benefits of White Vinegar in Laundry
Using white vinegar not only helps combat odors and germs but also acts as a natural fabric softener. The result is cleaner and fluffier pillows without the harsh chemicals found in typical laundry products. While bleach is often considered for laundry tasks, it can weaken fabric fibers and lead to discoloration. In contrast, white vinegar is an eco-friendly, non-toxic alternative that effectively tackles sweat and grime in a single wash.
Before washing, it is essential to identify the type of pillow being cleaned. Synthetic and feather pillows are generally machine-washable, while memory foam pillows should only be spot-cleaned and kept away from high heat. To ensure proper cleaning, wash only two pillows at a time to avoid overloading the washing machine.
Place the pillows in the machine without their pillowcases, using the regular laundry detergent but avoiding fabric softeners. Set the washing machine to a temperature between 40°C and 60°C, and opt for a gentle cycle, checking the care labels for specific instructions to prevent damage.
After the wash cycle is complete, it is important to run a rinse cycle. Add 120 ml of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment. Once the rinse finishes, shake the pillows thoroughly to fluff them up.
For drying, either air dry the pillows or place them in a tumble dryer on a low heat setting. Ensure that the pillows are completely dry before returning them to the bed, resulting in pillows that are not only cleaner but also whiter and softer than before.
Incorporating these tips into your pillow cleaning routine can lead to a more comfortable and hygienic sleep environment, especially during the colder months.
