Family Doctor Urges Action Amid Rapid Spread of Flu Variant
As a severe variant of the flu spreads rapidly across the United States, Dr. Jessica Kiss, a family physician, has outlined essential steps for those who may have been exposed to the influenza A(H3N2) virus. In a recent TikTok video, Dr. Kiss provided critical advice to help mitigate the impact of this illness, which has surged in recent weeks.
Dr. Kiss, who is known for her user-friendly medical advice on social media under the username @AskDrMom, emphasized that individuals exposed to someone with the H3N2 strain should be vigilant. The incubation period for this variant ranges from one to four days, meaning symptoms can develop within that timeframe, often before the individual becomes contagious. She stated, “The virus is already replicating in you,” highlighting the importance of preventive measures.
Key Preventive Measures and Treatment Options
To reduce the risk of transmission, Dr. Kiss recommends rigorous handwashing and the use of masks whenever possible. She also mentioned that some evidence suggests aggressive nasal saline rinses may provide additional protection, although their effectiveness remains uncertain.
For those who have been exposed, Dr. Kiss outlined two antiviral medications: Tamiflu and Xofluza as effective options. Both can be prescribed before symptoms appear. Xofluza is particularly notable for its single-dose regimen, which can be taken either upon exposure or if flu symptoms arise. Dr. Kiss explained, “You need to take it within 72 hours of having symptoms,” to ensure its efficacy.
While concerns about resistance to Xofluza have been noted in some studies, Dr. Kiss clarified that she and her colleagues have not observed this clinically. For Tamiflu, typically administered twice daily for five days, different protocols apply when taken prophylactically after exposure. She advised that doctors may adjust dosages based on individual circumstances, underscoring the importance of consulting a healthcare provider.
The Current Flu Situation in the United States
As of December 13, reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that states such as New York, New Jersey, and Louisiana are experiencing “very high” flu-like symptoms among patients. The week ending December 20 marked a record for flu infections in New York, with over 71,123 cases reported. Other states, including Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Michigan, are also grappling with elevated flu activity.
In the comment section of her video, viewers shared personal experiences and tips for managing flu exposure. Suggestions ranged from sanitizing grocery cart handles to isolating family members showing symptoms. One viewer noted, “I wear a mask when I go in. I spray myself down with Microban when I leave the room,” illustrating the lengths people are willing to go to avoid infection.
The CDC continues to monitor the situation, reporting that flu infections are rising in 47 states, with Hawaii being the only state experiencing a decline. As the flu season progresses, public health officials stress the importance of awareness and preventive measures to protect oneself and others from this potentially severe illness.
