Flu Cases Surge in Scotland with New Strain Leading Increase
Flu cases in Scotland have surged dramatically, nearly doubling within a week. According to Public Health Scotland (PHS), laboratory-confirmed flu cases rose by 45%, increasing from 555 to 805 in the week ending November 23, 2023. Alongside this rise, hospital admissions jumped from 279 to 391, indicating a concerning trend early in the flu season.
The rise in flu activity is attributed to a mutation of the H3N2 strain, known for causing more severe illness, particularly among older adults. This year, the predominant strain among infections is the influenza A(H3N2), contrasting with previous years when influenza A(H1N1) was more frequently observed.
Rising Hospital Admissions and Test Positivity
The increase in flu cases has coincided with a sharp rise in test positivity rates, which climbed from 11.0% to 15.8%. Such levels of influenza activity are unusual for this time of year, as health officials have noted that all age groups are now affected. The Community Acute Respiratory Infection (CARI) primary care surveillance system reports that the virus is driving nearly a quarter (22.8%) of all acute respiratory infection consultations.
While flu numbers are on the rise, other respiratory pathogens have remained relatively stable. The levels of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) have remained low compared to last season, with hospital admissions increasing slightly from 118 to 138. Meanwhile, Covid-19 activity has either decreased or stabilized, with hospital admissions dropping from 79 to 60.
Impact on Public Health and Ongoing Monitoring
Despite the increase in flu cases, overall GP consultations for influenza-like illnesses have returned to baseline levels. However, children aged between five and fourteen continue to exhibit medium-level activity, indicating a specific concern for that demographic. Additionally, NHS24 has recorded an uptick in calls regarding respiratory symptoms, although these numbers remain low.
Public health officials are closely monitoring the situation as the flu season progresses. With the new strain and increasing cases, health authorities are emphasizing the importance of vaccination and preventive measures to mitigate the spread of the virus. As the situation develops, the focus will remain on protecting vulnerable populations and ensuring that healthcare resources are adequately prepared for any further increases in hospital admissions.
