Glasgow Hospitals Reinstate Face Mask Mandate to Combat Flu Spread
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has announced the reintroduction of face masks for all visitors and staff in its hospitals. This measure aims to mitigate the spread of flu as the winter season approaches. The recommendation follows guidance from the organization’s Infection Prevention and Control Teams and aligns with similar directives from other health boards across Scotland.
The health authority advises that a Fluid Resistant Surgical Mask, akin to those used during the Covid-19 pandemic, should be worn at all times while on hospital premises. This initiative is designed to protect both patients and staff, particularly those who are most vulnerable to the flu virus.
Guidance for Visitors and Patients
In an effort to streamline care, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has urged individuals exhibiting mild to moderate flu symptoms not to attend Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments or visit patients in hospitals. Instead, those experiencing symptoms are encouraged to consult NHS Inform, contact their local General Practitioner (GP), or visit a nearby pharmacy without an appointment. For cases deemed urgent, individuals can call NHS 24 at 111, where they will be directed to an emergency appointment if necessary.
Professor Angela Wallace, Executive Director of Nursing at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, emphasized the importance of these precautions. “Flu season is here, and we want to ensure that you, your loved ones, and those who are the most vulnerable stay protected,” she stated. “By wearing a mask when you visit a hospital or by following our simple suggestions if you are experiencing symptoms, you are doing your part to help reduce the spread of the virus.”
Vaccine Availability and Recommendations
Further reinforcing its health message, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is reminding the public that vaccination is the most effective way to enhance protection against the flu. Those eligible for the vaccine will receive an invitation, and for those who missed their appointments, many community pharmacies are offering the vaccine, subject to availability.
Additionally, mobile vaccination clinics are operating throughout the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area, allowing eligible patients to receive their vaccine without needing an appointment.
As the flu season progresses, health officials continue to advocate for preventive measures to safeguard the community’s health.
