H3N2 Flu Strain Surges in the UK: Key Symptoms to Watch
A new strain of influenza known as H3N2 is spreading across the UK, prompting health officials to issue warnings about its symptoms. According to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), flu positivity rates in England increased to 21 percent during the week ending December 7, 2023, compared to 17 percent the previous week. Hospital admissions related to influenza also rose, reaching 10.05 per 100,000 people, up from 8.09 per 100,000.
Ayesha Bashir, a prescribing pharmacist at Chemist4U, highlighted the symptoms associated with the H3N2 strain, noting that they are similar to those of other flu variants. She explained, “You may have seen reports about a new flu strain being monitored this season, called H3N2. Flu viruses constantly shift and evolve, so it’s not unusual for new strains to develop and be monitored closely.”
Bashir emphasized that the symptoms remain consistent across different flu strains, making it difficult for individuals to identify which specific variant they may have contracted. The key symptoms to watch for include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue.
As winter progresses, influenza cases often increase, and this year appears to be no exception. Bashir noted that the current surge is attributed to the timing and behavior of the public. “As soon as the weather becomes cold, we all spend more time indoors where viruses spread much more easily,” she stated. The presence of multiple flu strains, including H3N2, creates additional opportunities for infection.
She advised individuals to assess their overall health when experiencing flu-like symptoms. “If you’re struggling to breathe, have chest pain, or your symptoms are worsening after a few days, it’s important to seek medical advice,” she said. For most healthy adults, the flu is manageable at home with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter treatments. However, vulnerable populations—including those who are pregnant, over 65, very young, or living with chronic health conditions such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, or heart disease—should seek medical attention promptly.
To minimize health risks during the winter months, Bashir offered several recommendations. She stated, “New strains like H3N2 can sound worrying, but they’re part of how the flu virus behaves every year. The good news is we already know that vaccination, good hygiene, and early symptom management still make a huge difference.” Individuals uncertain about their symptoms are encouraged to consult with a healthcare professional.
As the H3N2 strain continues to circulate, public awareness of the symptoms and preventive measures is crucial. Staying informed and seeking timely medical advice can help manage the spread of influenza and protect the health of those at greater risk.
