Heysham Woman Launches Fundraiser for Life-Saving Cancer Treatment
A woman from Heysham, who is battling a brain tumour, is seeking financial support to fund private cancer treatment that she cannot access through the National Health Service (NHS). Sarah Thompson, 34, was diagnosed with the life-threatening condition earlier this year and has since been exploring treatment options that could prolong her life.
Thompson has launched a fundraising campaign with a goal of raising £150,000. This amount covers the costs of advanced treatments and therapies not currently available on the NHS. The urgency of her situation has mobilized her local community, with friends and family rallying to support her efforts.
In her appeal, Thompson expressed the emotional toll of her diagnosis and the desire to create precious moments with her young children. “I want to fight for my life, not just for me but for my children,” she stated. The response from the community has been overwhelming, with numerous events planned to assist in reaching her fundraising target.
The campaign, which began in early October 2023, has already garnered significant attention on social media platforms. Local businesses have also stepped up, donating items for auctions and organizing fundraising events.
Thompson’s situation highlights the challenges faced by many patients who seek treatments deemed experimental or innovative but are not part of standard NHS offerings. The NHS, while providing essential healthcare services, often has limitations on the types of therapies it can fund. This leaves some patients like Thompson looking elsewhere for solutions that could offer hope.
As the fundraiser continues, Thompson remains optimistic. “Every little bit helps,” she said, emphasizing the importance of community support in her journey. The campaign not only aims to raise funds but also to raise awareness about the struggles faced by those diagnosed with brain tumours.
For those wishing to contribute, donations can be made through the GoFundMe page set up by Thompson’s family. As of now, the total raised stands at over £30,000, a testament to the compassion and solidarity of the Heysham community.
Thompson’s story resonates with many who have faced similar battles against illness, showcasing the power of community and the relentless human spirit in the face of adversity.
