Kyren Wilson Faces Snooker Challenge Amid Wife’s Health Struggles
Kyren Wilson has returned to snooker competition as he navigates personal challenges related to his wife’s health. The 33-year-old athlete, ranked No. 2 in the world, recently took a break from the sport to support his wife, Sophie, who has been undergoing significant health issues. Wilson is set to compete in the International Championship in Nanjing, China, where he will face David Lilley in the opening round on Monday morning (1:30 a.m. UK time).
Wilson’s commitment to family has influenced his performance, with early exits in major tournaments including the Wuhan Open, British Open, and English Open this year. Despite these setbacks, he reached the quarter-finals of the Northern Ireland Open, indicating a potential resurgence in his form.
During an interview with the World Snooker Tour, Wilson candidly shared the impact of his wife’s condition on his focus. “My wife has been very poorly, so I’ve not really played snooker for the best part of four or five weeks now,” he explained. As Sophie approaches six weeks of recovery, Wilson feels his focus is gradually returning. He stated, “I can focus a bit more on my game. As a result, hopefully you start seeing the results that you’ve been used to.”
The decision to compete in China was not an easy one, as Wilson expressed concerns about leaving his wife during her recovery. “It kind of did my head in a little bit – it’s not nice knowing that someone is going to be on the operating table while you’re going to hit some snooker balls around,” he said. Nevertheless, he believes that sacrifices are necessary for success in professional sports.
In a positive turn, Wilson revealed that Sophie had received good news regarding her health before his participation in the Northern Ireland Open. “We’re about seven weeks in, my wife has had some surgery recently and we’ve been waiting on some results which thankfully have come back all good this week,” he told BBC Sport. This news has alleviated some of the strain on the family, allowing Wilson to concentrate on his upcoming matches.
Sophie Wilson, mother to their two children, has previously faced health challenges, including a stroke. The specifics surrounding her recent operation remain undisclosed, but Wilson shared that her health issues were exacerbated by their son’s illness last year, which triggered her epilepsy. “There have been lots of things going on with the family. So snooker has had to take a little bit of a backseat this year,” he noted in an interview with The Sun in April 2024.
Wilson’s decision to compete at the International Championship suggests optimism regarding his wife’s recovery. He hopes to regain his winning momentum, having recently triumphed at the Shanghai Masters in August and also winning the Players Championship and German Masters earlier in the year. With renewed focus and determination, Wilson aims to improve upon his quarter-final exit from last year’s International Championship and make a strong statement in Nanjing.
