Managing Holiday Health: Addressing Common Concerns
As the festive season approaches, health concerns can escalate, particularly related to dietary indulgences and underlying medical conditions. Among these, a lesser-known issue known as holiday heart syndrome can arise, characterized by irregular heartbeats triggered by overeating and excessive drinking. This condition predominantly affects individuals over 65, particularly men, as well as those with existing health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.
With the holidays often leading to increased consumption of rich foods, many individuals may experience symptoms of indigestion and bloating. However, while enjoying festive treats, it is essential to remain mindful of personal health.
Addressing Halitosis: A Common Concern
One common health concern raised during this time is persistent bad breath, or halitosis. A reader recently inquired about her husband’s struggle with this issue. Despite maintaining good oral hygiene—brushing twice daily and visiting the dentist every six months—he suffers from significant bad breath, leading to concerns about personal hygiene.
This condition, particularly in older adults, can stem from various non-dental causes. The most prevalent issue is a dry mouth (xerostomia), which occurs when salivary production diminishes, allowing bacteria to thrive and produce odorous compounds. Medications for conditions such as prostate cancer, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension can contribute to this dry mouth.
To manage this, it is advisable to increase saliva production through frequent sips of water and the use of sugar-free chewing gum or lozenges. Additionally, discussing medication side effects with a healthcare provider may provide options for alternative treatments that minimize dry mouth. A visit to the dentist can also help address any concerns regarding halitosis.
Neuropathic Pain Management
Another reader, an active 84-year-old, reported experiencing a burning sensation in her legs at night, which disrupts her sleep. She has been prescribed pregabalin and duloxetine, both medications used to treat nerve pain.
The burning sensation suggests small fibre neuropathy, which affects tiny nerve endings and may not be detected by standard nerve conduction tests. While the current dosage of pregabalin is relatively low, many individuals require higher doses for adequate relief, especially at night. Duloxetine, while classified as an antidepressant, is effective for treating nerve pain and can improve sleep quality.
Patients should communicate with their healthcare providers about medication adjustments if side effects are experienced. Additional non-drug strategies can help manage neuropathic pain, such as keeping the legs cool and employing light stretching before bed.
Tinnitus: Understanding the Noise
A 74-year-old reader expressed concerns regarding an increase in her tinnitus, particularly noticeable in quiet settings. Tinnitus often arises from age-related hearing loss, where damage to hair cells in the inner ear prompts the brain to amplify sound, resulting in a ringing sensation.
The reader’s history of an inner ear infection may have contributed to ongoing inflammation. While neck pain can exacerbate the perception of tinnitus, there is no evidence linking the consumption of blueberries to this condition, allowing her to continue enjoying them without concern.
For those suffering from tinnitus, comprehensive hearing tests are crucial, as hearing aids can alleviate symptoms by reintroducing external sound. Techniques such as sound therapy and tinnitus retraining therapy can help individuals manage their symptoms effectively.
Recognizing Alcohol Dependency During the Holidays
As holiday celebrations commence, the risk of alcohol dependency may increase. Elizabeth Walker, a recovery coach, emphasizes the importance of recognizing signs of problematic drinking. Indicators include the inability to limit drinking, prioritizing alcohol over personal responsibilities, and experiencing withdrawal symptoms.
Family and friends should be vigilant for these signs, particularly during festive gatherings when excessive drinking may be normalized. Approaching conversations with empathy and understanding is vital, especially if a loved one is open to discussing their relationship with alcohol.
For those concerned about a loved one’s drinking habits, it may be beneficial to guide them towards professional help, such as a consultation with their GP or organizations like Alcohol Change UK.
As the holiday season unfolds, prioritizing health and well-being is essential. By addressing these common concerns proactively, individuals can ensure a more enjoyable and health-conscious festive experience.
