Nestlé Recalls Infant Formulas Due to Potential Toxicity Risk

Nestlé has announced a global recall of several infant formula products following concerns regarding the possible presence of a bacterial toxin. This decision affects multiple countries and brands, with specific products varying by location. The company identified a potential quality issue linked to arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, which is used in various infant nutrition products.

The recall was initiated on January 6, 2024, in Hong Kong, where Nestlé issued a voluntary notice for items under the Nestlé NAN and Wyeth brands. In New Zealand, health authorities, including Food Safety, Pharmac, and the Ministry of Health, advised consumers about the recall of the specialist infant formula, Alfamino. Six Nestlé NAN products are included in the recall, such as NAN PRO 3 BL 2 HMO (800g) and several versions of NAN Infinipro, with expiration dates ranging from July to November 2025.

Additionally, 12 products from the Nestlé Wyeth range are affected, including S-26 ULTIMA 2 (800g) and ILLUMA series products. These items are available in Hong Kong and through cross-border e-commerce platforms. The Alfamino products in New Zealand are primarily prescribed, although some may have been purchased over-the-counter at pharmacies or online.

Nestlé has confirmed that, to date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the affected products. New Zealand Food Safety also stated that there have been no associated health concerns reported at this time. Consumers are advised to monitor for symptoms such as severe vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual lethargy, which may occur within 30 minutes to six hours after exposure.

Investigation and Response

In light of this potential health risk, Nestlé is conducting thorough testing of all ARA oil and related oil mixes used in its infant nutrition products. The company indicated that the presence of the toxin cereulide—produced by certain strains of the microorganism, Bacillus cereus—in oils is considered “very uncommon.” Nestlé reported that it was informed of the possible quality issue by its supplier and is collaborating with them on a full root-cause analysis.

A spokesperson from Nestlé stated, “Following the detection of a quality issue with an ingredient provided by a leading supplier, Nestlé has undertaken testing of all ARA oil and corresponding oil mixes used in the production of its potentially affected infant nutrition products.” The company is in contact with authorities in the impacted markets to ensure all necessary measures are implemented.

As of January 7, 2024, product recalls have been expanded to include 27 markets in Europe and three in the Americas. The batches involved in this recall represent less than 0.5% of Nestlé’s annual group sales. The company has stated that it does not expect a significant financial impact from the recall.

This incident highlights the importance of vigilance in food safety, especially concerning infant nutrition products. Nestlé is taking proactive steps to address the issue and maintain consumer trust while ensuring the safety of its products across various markets.
