NHS Forth Valley Lifts Visiting Restrictions as Flu Cases Stabilize
Visiting restrictions at NHS Forth Valley have been lifted following a noted stabilization in seasonal flu cases. These measures were initially implemented on December 3, 2023, in response to a sharp increase in flu admissions, aimed at safeguarding both patients and healthcare staff. As of December 19, 2023, normal visiting arrangements are reinstated across all inpatient areas.
Hospital authorities encourage visitors to confirm arrangements with local wards beforehand. This is due to potential variations in visiting protocols based on specific clinical needs. The decision to ease restrictions comes in light of recent local infection control data, indicating that flu levels may be beginning to stabilize.
Prof Karen Goudie, the executive nurse director at NHS Forth Valley, stated, “We have seen some early positive signs which suggest flu cases, particularly in local hospitals, have reduced.” She expressed gratitude towards the public, patients, and staff for their cooperation during the temporary restrictions.
Despite the relaxation of visiting rules, health officials remain vigilant. Prof Goudie emphasized, “There is no room for complacency, and we will continue to closely monitor the situation and may reintroduce restrictions if cases of flu begin to rise.” She also highlighted the ongoing circulation of the virus, advising that individuals feeling unwell should refrain from visiting hospitals or care homes, as even mild symptoms could pose serious risks to vulnerable patients.
In addition to monitoring visitor protocols, the hospital continues to advocate for good hand hygiene practices. Patients attending healthcare appointments are encouraged to consider wearing face masks, especially if they have concerns about their infection risk. Masks will remain available at the entrances to wards and clinical areas.
Flu vaccination efforts are ongoing across the region, with drop-in sessions available at local vaccination centres and numerous pharmacies offering flu shots. Individuals who have yet to receive their vaccination are strongly urged to do so to bolster protection against influenza and mitigate the risk of severe illness.
For further information on vaccination availability, individuals can visit the NHS Forth Valley website or contact the local vaccination team at 0800 130 3120. The health authority continues to prioritize patient safety and community health as flu season progresses.
