Northern Ireland Sets Stage for Exciting Film and TV Releases in 2026
Northern Ireland’s vibrant film and television industry continues to thrive, with numerous projects slated for release in 2026. Following a remarkable year in 2025, the region has attracted Hollywood talent and produced a variety of award-winning series and films that have showcased its stunning landscapes and rich culture. As production crews wrap up filming across the country, audiences can look forward to a diverse array of content.
New Series Highlight Northern Ireland’s Creative Landscape
One of the most anticipated releases is the Netflix series, How To Get To Heaven From Belfast, created by Lisa McGee, known for the acclaimed show Derry Girls. The series centers on three childhood friends, now in their late 30s, as they confront their past following the death of a former friend. Their journey, filled with dark humor and unexpected twists, showcases the beauty and complexity of friendships. Filming concluded in late 2024, and viewers can expect to see it debut in February 2026.
Meanwhile, the world of Westeros returns with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a new series based on George R. R. Martin’s novella. Set approximately 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, this series follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg. The first season is set to air on Sky Atlantic and Now TV starting January 19, 2026, with a second series already in production in Northern Ireland.
In a darker reimagining of the classic legend, a new film featuring Bill Murray and Jodie Comer is expected to release later this year. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film follows an older, battle-scarred Robin Hood as he seeks redemption after a violent past. The production, supported by Northern Ireland Screen, wrapped up filming in March 2025 at Belfast Harbour Studios.
Diverse Content for All Audiences
In addition to dramas, Northern Ireland will also host a unique golfing series featuring Bill Murray. Titled Off Course, the show promises to be a charming exploration of iconic golf courses across the island, blending humor with breathtaking landscapes. Scheduled to air in 2026, the series aims to celebrate both the game and the culture of the region.
The BBC has commissioned a new quiz show, Do You Know Your Place, hosted by Vernon Kay and featuring Paul Gorton from The Traitors. This entertaining format will test celebrity guests on their knowledge of the UK while they navigate various towns and cities. Although an air date is yet to be announced, it is expected to premiere on BBC Two later this year.
For younger audiences, Crookhaven is a thrilling drama based on a popular book series by JJ Arcanjo. Set in a secret school for young criminals, this series explores themes of identity and loyalty. Filming took place last summer, with the eight-episode series scheduled to stream on BBC iPlayer in early 2026.
Finally, Ronan Keating‘s travelogue, Wild Atlantic, will take viewers on a journey along the breathtaking Wild Atlantic Coast of Ireland, sharing personal stories and insights. Some segments were filmed in Derry, reflecting the region’s picturesque landscapes and rich heritage.
As Northern Ireland’s film and television sector continues to flourish, these upcoming releases promise to entertain and engage audiences both locally and globally. With a mix of humor, adventure, and heartfelt storytelling, the region is set to make its mark on the international entertainment scene once again.
