Pharmacist Advocates Natural Alternatives to Weight Loss Injections
As the prevalence of obesity rises, a pharmacist has highlighted eight natural ingredients that could serve as alternatives to popular weight loss injections. According to Mike Wakeman, a researcher and pharmacist at Evera Nutrition, these ingredients may help individuals manage their weight more effectively without the side effects associated with injections.
Recent statistics show that 28% of adults in the UK are classified as obese, with an additional 36% identified as overweight. The increasing demand for weight loss solutions has led to approximately 1.5 million people using weight loss injections on a monthly basis. While these injections can lead to substantial weight loss, experts caution that they do not address underlying factors contributing to weight gain.
Wakeman explained that weight loss injections primarily increase levels of two hormones in the gut—GLP-1 and GiP. These hormones reduce appetite, enhance the feeling of fullness, and slow gastric emptying. However, many users depend solely on these medications while neglecting other crucial factors, such as stress, poor sleep, and unhealthy eating habits.
Research indicates that individuals often regain nearly all the weight lost after discontinuing injections within a year. Side effects frequently reported include nausea, vomiting, constipation, and reflux. More severe risks encompass pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, depression, and muscle wastage due to rapid weight loss.
Exploring Natural Alternatives
Wakeman asserts that various natural ingredients can effectively mimic the effects of GLP-1 and GiP without the associated risks. He emphasizes the potential of Glucomannan, Resveratrol, Hibiscus, Green Tea, Berberine, Curcumin, Cinnamon, and Mulberry when combined with healthy lifestyle choices. These ingredients are incorporated into the formulation of Evera Nutrition Go Lean Plus, designed to support appetite control and metabolic health.
Wakeman elaborated on the benefits of each ingredient. For instance, Glucomannan, derived from konjac root, expands in the gut to promote feelings of fullness and may enhance GLP-1 levels. Resveratrol, found in grapes, has demonstrated a positive impact on body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference.
Hibiscus has been shown to lower obesity rates and improve blood lipid profiles. The catechins in green tea, particularly EGCG, are noted for their ability to reduce weight, BMI, and waist circumference, especially when combined with proper diet and exercise. Berberine, a plant compound, is also recognized for its weight loss effects, supported by a meta-analysis involving twelve studies.
Additionally, Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been associated with reductions in body weight and BMI according to a comprehensive meta-analysis of numerous studies. Cinnamon has been shown to improve blood sugar control, further assisting weight management. Lastly, Mulberry exhibits anti-obesity properties, potentially activating brown fat.
Mechanisms at Play
Some of these natural ingredients may also play a role in inhibiting Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP4), an enzyme responsible for breaking down GLP-1 and GiP. By blocking this enzyme, these ingredients can prolong the effectiveness of these hormones, enhancing their weight management benefits.
Wakeman noted that other ingredients, such as Maritime Pine Bark Extract, Blackcurrant, Quercetin, and Rosemary, may also contribute to DPP4 inhibition. The growing interest in these natural alternatives reflects a shift towards more holistic approaches to weight management.
The rising rates of obesity highlight the need for effective and sustainable weight loss solutions. As awareness of the potential risks associated with weight loss injections increases, individuals may find comfort in exploring natural alternatives that align with healthy lifestyle changes.
