The demand for weight loss injections, commonly referred to as “fat jabs,” is projected to exceed three million patients in 2026, marking a significant increase from previous years. Experts are raising alarms about the rising prevalence of counterfeit products in the black market, which are becoming increasingly sophisticated and can easily deceive consumers seeking lower prices.

According to polling conducted by the National Pharmacy Association, approximately six percent of adults in the UK are expected to begin using weight loss injections like Mounjaro and Wegovy this year. This figure translates to around 3.3 million individuals in England, up from an estimated 1.5 million regular users in 2025. Alarmingly, one in ten people under the age of 50 indicated that they are considering trying these injections, which can promote rapid weight loss at a cost of less than £150 per month for private purchases.

The National Pharmacy Association has urged individuals to exercise caution and avoid the temptation of lower prices found on the black market. The organization emphasizes the importance of purchasing these injections only from legitimate pharmacies, either in-person or through accredited online platforms. Chairman Olivier Picard highlighted the risks associated with unregulated sellers, stating, “We expect a surge in the number of patients looking to start weight management treatments in the new year. There is a risk of criminals trying to take advantage of this, and not only are unregulated sellers breaking the law, they can cause serious damage to your health.”

Recent findings from a YouGov survey of 2,074 adults conducted before Christmas revealed that approximately six percent of respondents expressed an intention to use weight loss injections in the coming year, with nine percent of those aged 25 to 49 showing interest. Despite a notable increase in NHS prescriptions for these treatments in the past year, the health service is struggling to meet the rising demand.

Health Risks and Regulatory Concerns

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency issued a warning earlier this week about the dangers of the black market for weight loss injections. Patients who purchase these products without a prescription face potential health risks, including the possibility of administering excessive doses, which could lead to serious side effects or even fatal outcomes.

Legitimate pharmacies are required to display a registration number from the General Pharmaceutical Council on their websites, allowing consumers to verify their credentials. As the popularity of weight loss injections continues to grow, it is vital for potential users to remain vigilant and prioritize their health and safety by sourcing medications from reputable providers.
