Young People Spend Over £6,500 Annually on Beauty Trends
A recent survey reveals that young people in the UK are spending more than £6,500 each year on unconventional beauty and wellness treatments. The study, conducted by Pukka Herbs, highlights a shift from traditional advice—such as cleansing, toning, and moisturizing—to a preference for more exotic and costly trends, including salmon sperm facials and mushroom powders.
The findings indicate that British women spend an average of £554 per month on beauty and wellness, while men are not far behind, spending approximately £431. Despite this high expenditure, a significant 94% of the respondents believe there is a need to return to basic health practices. This sentiment is echoed by nearly two-thirds of those surveyed, who often reflect on the simpler routines of previous generations.
Overwhelmed by Modern Trends
Of the 2,000 people surveyed, nearly half reported maintaining a regular self-care routine. Popular items include collagen supplements, with 37% of respondents utilizing them, and 31% opting for multi-vitamin pills or injections. Yet, the pressure to keep up with contemporary beauty trends leaves many feeling overwhelmed—52% of individuals under 40 expressed this sentiment, while 25% admitted to overspending on products designed to enhance their appearance.
The survey highlights the most purchased products in recent years: collagen supplements (49%) and probiotic skincare (36%). However, frustration is evident, as 23% of participants acknowledged feeling misled by the marketing of wellness products that failed to deliver on their promises.
A Call for Simplicity
In contrast to the current fixation on complex beauty routines, respondents fondly recall the straightforward health principles advocated by older generations. A notable 79% of those surveyed believe that self-care was simpler 25 years ago. Key practices included prioritizing good sleep (72%), hydration (65%), and outdoor activity (52%).
In alignment with this perspective, 92% of participants agreed that connecting with nature positively impacts both physical and mental health, with 47% striving to spend at least one hour outdoors each day.
Eleonora Zoani, Senior Herbal Blending Manager at Pukka, emphasizes the challenges posed by today’s wellness landscape. “From expensive ‘miracle’ remedies to artificial products, we’re living in a time where our modern wellness routines have become a source of overwhelm,” she stated. Zoani advocates for a return to nature and the daily consumption of herbal teas, suggesting that these simpler methods can help individuals reclaim their health without the stress of modern trends.
The survey’s insights reflect a growing desire among consumers for more straightforward and effective approaches to wellness. As beauty and wellness industries continue to evolve, the demand for authentic, accessible solutions may reshape how individuals approach their health and self-care routines in the future.
