Young Woman Loses Eye in Horrific Dog Walk Accident
A routine evening walk with her dog turned into a life-altering tragedy for Daniella Abreu, 25, when a freak accident left her with severe injuries and ultimately cost her an eye. The incident occurred in August 2023 while Daniella was walking her two-year-old Siberian Husky, Blu, in a quiet neighborhood in Florida, United States.
After a busy day of meal prepping and visiting the gym, Daniella decided to take Blu for his usual evening stroll. She had just connected with her cousin via FaceTime when Blu suddenly lunged at something in the dark, triggering a series of events that would change her life forever. Daniella had used an old retractable lead, which she had not employed since Blu was a puppy, without considering its safety for a dog of his size.
Within minutes of leaving her home, the lead snapped, striking her directly in the eye. “I heard a loud snap and something hit me straight in the eye,” she recounted. “There was no pain at first, just this ringing in my ear. Then blood started gushing out, and I realized I couldn’t see out of my right eye.”
In a panic, Daniella managed to return home, where her parents, Luz and Nelson Abreu, found her on the floor, unconscious from blood loss. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital, where doctors revealed the extent of her injuries: a ruptured eye globe, a detached retina, and fractures around her eye socket. Following emergency surgery, Daniella learned that she would never regain sight in her right eye.
Life After the Accident
The aftermath of the accident was filled with physical pain and emotional distress. Daniella spent two weeks in the hospital, enduring severe migraines and anxiety. Upon returning home, she struggled with her appearance and self-esteem as her injured eye turned grey and shrunken. “I didn’t recognize myself and kept thinking how ugly I was,” she said.
As her vision completely faded, everyday tasks became increasingly difficult. Activities she once enjoyed, like taking photos with friends, were no longer feasible. Despite the challenges, Daniella found solace in her family and her beloved dog. “Even though I couldn’t bring myself to walk Blu again, just having him there made me smile,” she explained.
Months later, in November 2023, doctors informed Daniella that the damaged eye would need to be removed to prevent potential infections that could jeopardize her remaining vision. “I was crushed but I was left with no choice,” she stated. The surgical procedure to remove her eye took place in December 2023, followed by a recovery period during which she wore an eye patch.
A Journey Toward Healing
After enduring the removal of her right eye and dealing with a burst appendix just a week later, Daniella began to reclaim her life. By February 2024, she received a prosthetic eye that closely resembled her natural one, which played a significant role in restoring her confidence. “When I had my prosthetic eye fitted, I was stunned at how realistic it looked,” she remarked.
Nearly a year after the accident, Daniella found the courage to take Blu for a walk again, using a standard rope lead this time. “It was very emotional,” she said. “I finally felt ready to walk Blu and it went absolutely fine.” Following her experience, she has become an advocate for safe dog walking practices, particularly concerning retractable leads.
Daniella now shares her story on social media, receiving messages from other pet owners who have faced similar accidents. “To any dog owners reading, please use a normal rope lead and make sure you know what’s safe for your dog’s size,” she advises. While she may have lost her eye, Daniella is determined to turn her tragedy into a message of awareness and empowerment.
