Cetinje Honors Dr. Mihail Vukmirovic and the Faculty of Montenegrin Language
The city of Cetinje has awarded the prestigious Ivan Crnojevic Charter to the Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature and recognized Dr. Mihail Vukmirovic for his significant contributions to medicine. This year’s ceremony took place at the Government House in Cetinje, where the charter for 2024 was presented to Dr. Vukmirovic, whose recognition was postponed last year due to a tragic event in the city.
Cetinje’s Mayor, Nikola Đuraskovic, presented the awards and underscored the historical importance of Cetinje in preserving Montenegrin identity and statehood. He emphasized the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Montenegro’s independence restoration, describing it as a testament to the enduring aspirations of the Montenegrin people for freedom and self-governance.
In his address, Đuraskovic remarked, “The restoration of independence in 2006 expressed the same determination that guided Ivan Crnojevic, highlighting the right of the people to determine their own fate and the responsibility towards the state, which must be actively nurtured.”
Dr. Vukmirovic, honored with the 2024 Charter, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition. He described the award as not only a personal honor but also a significant responsibility. “I owe a special gratitude to my city for elevating me beyond my expectations. This award is a commitment to continue on the path of compassion and excellence,” he stated. He encouraged young creators to bravely pursue their dreams and to believe in the power of knowledge and creativity.
The Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature, which received the charter for 2025, was represented by Professor Boban Batricevic. He thanked the community for its support since the faculty’s inception. “I am pleased that the Prijestonica Cetinje recognizes our efforts during these challenging times for our country and nation,” he said.
Batricevic highlighted the faculty’s perseverance amid social and political upheaval, noting that its professors and researchers courageously defend the fundamental values of Montenegrin statehood while remaining true to principles of free thought and academic integrity. He stated, “By awarding the charter named after Cetinje’s founder, Prijestonica Cetinje acknowledges an institution that confirms the values upon which it was established: free thought, cultural consciousness, and resilience in preserving the identity that underpins Montenegrin statehood.”
The evening served as a poignant reminder of Cetinje’s rich history and the vital role of its institutions in shaping the country’s future. The recognition of both Dr. Vukmirovic and the Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature reinforces the importance of cultural and educational endeavors in maintaining national identity and pride.
