Children’s Charity Leader Carol Homden Honoured as DBE
The chief executive of the children’s charity Coram, Carol Homden, has been appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the New Year Honours for her significant contributions to the welfare of children and families. This recognition, which highlights her dedication and leadership over the years, has prompted Dr. Homden to express her heartfelt thanks to her colleagues and supporters.
Dr. Homden, aged 65, who resides in both Mildenhall and London, has led Coram since 2007. Under her stewardship, the charity has made substantial strides in its mission to support vulnerable children and families. One of her key initiatives includes the establishment of the Coram Institute for Children, which focuses on evidence-based policy and practice to improve outcomes for young people.
In addition to her role at Coram, Dr. Homden has an extensive background in child welfare. She formerly served on the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales and held a position on the Adoption Leadership Board for seven years. Her leadership experience extends to her decade-long tenure as Chair of the National Autistic Society and her current role as Chair of Diabetes UK. Furthermore, she is a trustee of the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health.
Dr. Homden’s personal journey also informs her professional commitments. She is married to author Steve Caplin, and they have two sons, including their eldest, who is autistic and faces learning difficulties. This family experience deeply influences her advocacy for children facing adversities.
In response to her award, Dr. Homden remarked, “It is humbling and overwhelming to receive such an honour.” She emphasized that her achievements are shared with her dedicated team, stating, “It’s important that the honour is made because it recognises the great work that is done for children and families on a daily basis.” Dr. Homden attributes her ability to fulfill her responsibilities to the unwavering support of her family, particularly her husband.
Reactions from colleagues reflect a collective pride within the organisation. Professor Ivor Crewe, President and Chair of the Coram Board of Trustees, expressed the sentiments of the charity’s staff and volunteers, stating, “It is due recognition of her inexhaustible devotion to the welfare of the nation’s children over close to twenty years and her inspired leadership of Coram.” He noted that without Dr. Homden’s “energy, resourcefulness and dedication,” Coram might not have evolved into one of Britain’s leading children’s charities.
The recognition of Dr. Homden not only celebrates her individual accomplishments but also shines a light on the ongoing efforts of many individuals dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children. Her work highlights the importance of collaboration across various sectors, including health, education, law, and social care, in creating better opportunities for children facing challenges.
As the landscape of child welfare continues to evolve, Dr. Homden’s leadership serves as a beacon for those striving to make a difference in the lives of children and families.
