Es Devlin Unveils “Library of Us” at Miami Art Week
British designer Es Devlin has launched her latest installation, “Library of Us,” on Faena Beach as part of the annual Miami Art Week. Measuring 50 feet in length, this rotating library features an impressive collection of 2,500 books, celebrating the connections between literature, community, and the natural environment.
The installation, which is part of the Faena Arts program, presents a unique triangular bookshop adorned with a vibrant 34-foot strip of LED text. Every ten minutes, the structure rotates on a metallic plinth, casting colorful reflections on the water below. Visitors can engage with the installation by sitting at its two-ring circular table, where they can enjoy a selection of literary passages that contribute to a serene atmosphere of shared experience.
Devlin has enriched the installation with a 250-excerpt audio score, narrated by herself. This auditory component adds another layer to the immersive experience, where memories, literary fragments, and music intertwine, creating a polyphonic soundscape that resonates with the rhythms of the tides.
In partnership with Penguin Random House, all 2,500 books featured in “Library of Us” will be donated to public libraries, schools, and community organizations across Miami after the installation concludes on December 7, 2023. This initiative underscores Devlin’s commitment to fostering literacy and community engagement through art.
The installation is adjacent to other notable artworks featured at Miami Art Week, including Leandro Erlich‘s underwater traffic jam and Pilar Zeta‘s iridescent beachside castle. “Library of Us” provides a tranquil retreat from the bustling atmosphere of the art fair, inviting visitors to pause and reflect in a space that celebrates the joy of reading and collective experience.
As Miami Art Week continues to attract global attention, Es Devlin’s “Library of Us” stands out not only for its artistic innovation but also for its dedication to making literature accessible to a wider audience. The installation serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community and the shared love of books, echoing through both its visual and auditory elements.
