This warning highlights how a seemingly innocuous household item can lead to costly damage.

The primary concern arises when these bags become wet. The strong dyes used in their manufacturing can transfer onto kitchen worktops, particularly those made from porous materials like granite, quartz, or marble. When moisture interacts with these surfaces, the dye seeps into tiny fissures and pores, creating lasting stains that can be difficult to remove.

Liv Reed, a representative from Prestige Granite, explained the issue in detail: “What many don’t realise is that reusable plastic bags often use strong dyes in their design, which can easily transfer when the material becomes damp.” The absorption of these pigments leads to deep-set marks that bond beneath the surface, making them challenging to eliminate.

In cases where stains occur, Reed suggests a few initial steps for homeowners to take. “If the ink seems impossible to remove, the recommended course of action would be to first try a multi-surface spray. If that doesn’t work, a cream cleaner such as CIF or The Pink Stuff can be used, followed by Acetone if necessary.” However, she cautioned that if these methods fail, the stains become permanent, often leaving homeowners with no choice but to seek professional treatment or even consider replacement of the affected surfaces.

Reed highlighted the often-overlooked nature of this risk, noting, “It’s a silent risk that most households overlook, but simply leaving a wet bag for life on the worktop for a short time could trigger permanent staining.” This warning serves as a reminder for homeowners to be cautious with their kitchen surfaces, particularly those made from porous materials.
