ITV’s ‘This Morning’ Faces Backlash Over Micropenis Segment
Viewers of ITV’s morning programme, This Morning, expressed their discontent after a segment aired featuring a man claiming to have the “world’s smallest penis.” Michael Phillips, a 38-year-old from North Carolina, shared that his genital size measures just 0.38 inches, significantly below the average of 5.5 inches. The segment aired on Wednesday, prompting a wave of reactions on social media regarding the sensitivity of the topic.
During the discussion with presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, Phillips detailed the lifelong impact of his condition. He recounted his feelings of isolation throughout his teenage years, stating, “I thought I was a late bloomer, maybe one day it would be normal size, but it never happened.” He also revealed his struggle to discuss the matter with his adoptive family, noting that it was a topic he felt uncomfortable addressing.
“I kept it to myself when I was in my teens and twenties,” he explained. “I was always single even though I had friends. They wondered why I wasn’t dating, and I didn’t want to go through that.” While the issue did not pose significant challenges during his adolescence, Phillips admitted that it has complicated his adult relationships.
He shared, “I can’t go out and have a one-night stand, but it also affects my ability to use a restroom, my confidence. Even sitting down can be tricky.” His candid remarks highlighted the everyday difficulties he faces, which extend beyond intimate relationships.
The segment drew a mixed response from the audience, with many viewers taking to social media to voice their opinions. One user commented, “Suppose it’s easy to slag the bloke with the smallest penis. Must be horrible for him.” Another questioned the editorial choice of the segment, asking, “Slow news day? #thismorning meet the man with the world’s smallest penis.” Critics of the show’s decision to feature Phillips expressed concerns about exploitation, with one viewer asking, “Why do you guys persist in exploiting people like this?”
Despite the backlash, Phillips clarified his intentions for coming forward. He found unexpected motivation in a lighthearted conversation about potentially holding a Guinness World Record. “If I could go for it, I would—I think it could help bring more awareness,” he stated. He has since turned to social media, particularly Instagram, to address his condition more openly, finding encouragement from followers who resonate with his experiences.
In his reflections, Phillips condemned society’s fixation on size, arguing that men face unrealistic expectations with little representation for those who do not conform. “There really isn’t very much representation for small sizes in media and almost zero mention of micro penis being portrayed as a real medical condition,” he said.
Phillips’ story underscores the importance of discussing sensitive health topics openly, while also shedding light on the often-overlooked challenges faced by individuals with conditions that deviate from societal norms. As conversations around body image and mental health continue to evolve, his candidness serves as a reminder of the need for greater understanding and representation in media.
