Joanikije Discusses the Destruction of Lovćen Chapel’s Legacy

The Lovćen Chapel in Montenegro was destroyed during a period described by the Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Coast, Joanikije (Mićović), as an “illegal marriage” between Nazism and Communism. This assertion was made during a lecture titled “The Secret of the Lovćen Chapel,” held at the Cultural Centre in Pljevlja.

Joanikije elaborated on the historical context surrounding the chapel’s demolition, attributing the main arguments for its destruction to Savić Marković Štedimlija. He noted that these ideas were later expanded upon by Vladimir Dedijer in the name of the Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito.

During the lecture, Joanikije expressed a vision for the future, stating that the chapel would only be restored when society becomes “better and more unified,” and when people repent for their sins over the past century. “Only then will we be capable of rebuilding the chapel on Lovćen,” he asserted.

The Metropolitan further emphasized the complex narrative surrounding the Lovćen Chapel, describing it as layered and interconnected with the region’s history. He pointed out that it encapsulates the past, present, and future of Montenegro, much like the spirit of Njegoš permeates all eras.

Joanikije also reflected on the history of the chapel’s construction and its subsequent restorations. He praised Knjaz Danilo for fulfilling Njegoš’s vow and highlighted the efforts of King Nikola to ensure regular liturgies were held there. He noted that the chapel faced destruction at the hands of the Austro-Hungarians.
