Metropolitan Joanikije Celebrates Christmas Eve Service in Bar
Metropolitan Joanikije, the head of the Montenegrin and Coast Diocese, led a Christmas Eve service at the Cathedral of Saint John Vladimir in Bar on December 24, 2023. The service, which attracted a significant number of worshippers, featured participation from local clergy and community leaders, including the Mayor of Bar, Dusan Raicevic.
In his sermon, Metropolitan Joanikije emphasized the significance of the Christmas celebration, stating that the holiday brings blessings and peace to the world. He remarked, “When we celebrate the living and true God with His angels, divine love, grace, and joy fill our hearts, and peace enters our souls.” He urged attendees to seek reconciliation with God and one another, encouraging them to see the divine goodness in every person.
The Metropolitan expressed joy at the large turnout, particularly noting the presence of many children. “It is wonderful to see so many families gathered here today. It is heartening that the mayor and local representatives are among us, as it is natural for leaders to be with their people rather than isolated in their offices,” he said. Joanikije indicated a sense of optimism, suggesting that a new era may be approaching, with the community slowly healing and coming together.
Reflecting on the meaning of the holiday, Joanikije referenced the biblical story of the wise men who followed a star to Bethlehem, contrasting it with King Herod, whose heart was filled with fear and hatred. He urged the congregation to celebrate the birth of Christ in peace, fostering unity and joy during the holy season.
The Metropolitan also highlighted the rich traditions of the Christmas holiday, filled with joy and deep spiritual significance. He invited children from the local religious school in Bar to present a festive program, which they prepared with their teacher, Slavica Orlandic. “The children will sing the Christmas hymn more beautifully than we adults, as they sing from their hearts and souls, filling us with joy,” he concluded.
The service not only marked a significant religious observance but also served as a community gathering, showcasing the strength of local ties and the shared spirit of the holiday season.
