Mowgli Street Food Closes Leicester Location After Seven Years
The popular Indian restaurant, Mowgli Street Food, has permanently closed its Leicester location after seven years of operation. Situated in St Martin’s Square, the restaurant ceased its services on December 29, 2023. Staff described the decision as “difficult” and one that followed “careful consideration.”
Opened in September 2019, Mowgli became a beloved spot in Leicester, known for its inviting atmosphere adorned with fairy lights and unique swing seats. The menu featured a variety of dishes under the ‘street plates’ category, including yoghurt chat bombs, Himalayan cheese toast, and gunpowder chicken. The ‘House Kitchen’ section offered popular options such as the Mowgli house chicken, Goan fish curry, and picnic potato curry. Guests could also enjoy sharing plates and a selection of ‘Curry Companions’, which included items like roti breads and miniature popadoms.
Lucy Worth, the chief executive of Mowgli, expressed gratitude to the community in a statement following the restaurant’s closure. “We are sad to announce that our Leicester restaurant closed on December 29. This was a difficult decision, made after careful consideration. We would like to thank our wonderful team and our loyal guests for their support over the years; it’s been a privilege serving the local community,” she said.
While the Leicester branch has closed, Worth remains optimistic about the future of the Mowgli brand. She highlighted potential new openings in the coming years, as well as refurbishments for existing locations in cities like Nottingham and Birmingham. Worth noted, “The future remains bright for Mowgli as we anticipate some exciting new openings in the next few years and look forward to the refurbishment of some of our older Mowgli restaurants soon.”
Recent customer reviews reflect a strong appreciation for the Leicester restaurant, which maintained an average rating of 4.2 stars across 1,237 reviews on Google. Diners frequently praised the food quality and atmosphere. One review stated, “Great food and an absolute bonus to have a dedicated gluten-free menu and a gluten-free beer! Will certainly be revisiting!” Another customer shared, “Had a really lovely evening. The food was fantastic. Raheem was our waiter and he was very attentive and friendly.”
Comments from other patrons included remarks on the welcoming atmosphere and excellent service. One visitor noted, “Lovely food, great atmosphere and friendly staff,” while another highlighted, “Raheem gave us excellent service. The food was as good as always.”
As the Leicester location closes its doors, its absence will be felt by many in the community. Mowgli Street Food has established a reputation for quality cuisine and a unique dining experience, leaving a lasting impression on its loyal customer base.
